Fighting fires isn't enough, and we must create sustainable investments in fire prevention and mitigation. With so many fires across the West, it's important to understand what's happening behind the scenes. This conversation illuminates some of the challenges around the fire in the West right now and why they are progressively getting worse while we have fewer and fewer resources to deal with them.

What does an autonomous sailboat called the Ada have to do with helping municipalities fulfill their obligations under the ADA (American's with Disabilities Act)? I'm glad you asked. I met Josh Andrews, co-founder of Spare this last Wednesday at Tidemark's VSaaS Collective Live event in San Francisco. At dinner the next night, he told me the story of how the three founders of Spare had worked together on Ada (the sailboat) at The University of British Columbia, and how it made it 700km across the Atlantic before a mechanical failure caused it to lose it's way (https://lnkd.in/g8vM7Wf5). After that, the three young engineers decided to start a company and instead of sailboats, focus on transportation management solutions for the 20% of the population that have difficulties with mobility. Spare helps municipalities around North America better serve these users, giving them equal access to public transportation services. I get it. My 22 year old daughter (whom we adopted from Ukraine when she was 10) doesn't have a driver's license due to developmental disabilities. She eBikes to work, but it's still a challenge for her to get around, especially in winter. That's one of the things that was most striking to me about the companies I met at Tidemark's Collective. They weren't serving the cool kids - the tech elite. They were serving main street industries helping everyday people (who usually have to scrape the bottom of the technology barrel) with elegantly engineered solutions to practical problems. At Jora AI we're building for real estate lawyers. Nathan Nasseri At ResVR, is equipping home builders show customers their home before it's built, Mallorie Brodie at Bridgit is helping contractors navigate workforce planning, and Robert Yuen is a former architect using Monograph to help other architects plan their projects. Jobber helps home service providers, Jane App helps wellness and medical practices. Toast is the OS for restaurants and my friend Brandon Hill has built Vori - the OS for independent grocery stores. Paralegals and grocery store stocking managers may seem like less sexy customers than software developers and tech startup CEOs, but you know what...these people deserve good tech too and their markets and their problems have often been ignored for YEARS by the elites in the silicon tower. I'm all for autonomous sailboats. But helping people with disabilities get from point A to point B is even more awesome. And helping contractors, architects, and restaurant managers get equal access to cutting edge tech is a good business to be in.
