About

👋 I am a "practice management advisor" which is a little known specialty made up of about 45 of us across the northern hemisphere, housed at bar associations and the like. As for me, I'm at the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA).

My day is made up of:

🤝 one-on-one consultations with AILA members who have practice management and ethics questions,
✏ writing articles and educational materials, and
🎬 presenting to audiences of immigration lawyers on all sorts of important topics.

I'm actually a lawyer by trade, which was interesting - I liked my clients and helping them make meaningful decisions in their lives.

But being a practicing lawyer just wasn't for me.

💪Instead, I realized my real passion was to help other lawyers succeed!

And that's why my current job is amazing -- truly an ideal role for me.

To teach, to research, to ruminate and write, to contemplate what will make the 15,000 inspired, bright AILA members' work and life better, then show them how to attain it, is more than fun and rewarding.

😊It's a dream job!

Oh and by the way, here's what I went to school:

🎓 My Juris Doctorate is from Seattle University School of Law and
🎓 My English BA is from the University of Washington. Nowadays

Educated on the West Coast, but today I'm an East Coaster, living in Baltimore, Maryland and working in Washington DC.

  • File Retention Is a Cybersecurity Issue

ABA Law Practice Division: Law Practice Today

I wonder sometimes if lawyers think file retention and document management policies and procedures are old-fashioned practice management notions that lawyers don’t really need to worry about anymore, especially for those paperless offices where electronic storage is cheap. Out of sight is out of mind. Some law offices have continued the tradition of many small firm practitioners of just keeping everything under the sun for the life of the firm and not worrying about it until the very end…

Out of sight is out of mind. Some law offices have continued the tradition of many small firm practitioners of just keeping everything under the sun for the life of the firm and not worrying about it until the very end. That’s definitely an old-fashioned way of dealing with the issue, and it doesn’t address the cybersecurity risk and data privacy issues raised by unrestricted retention. Give your policy (or non-policy) a checkup, using these generalized parameters and your own state ethics rules and data privacy rules.

In keeping with the spirit of progress, the Legal Technology Resource Center (LTRC) is proud to present its “Women of Legal Tech.” Our goal is to celebrate the women currently in the legal tech space and to encourage more women to join the ranks.

"Women of Legal Tech" began in 2015 with an initial list created by Law Technology Today contributor and practice management advisor, Heidi Alexander. The LTRC Board will continue to highlight more talented women each year.
