Making My Voice Heard: The Need for Change in the LBCC Upward Bound Program As a Latina and a first-generation student, I understand firsthand the challenges students like me face in navigating the educational system. It is with deep disappointment that I share my concerns about the Long Beach City College Upward Bound program, which is failing to live up to its promises and potentially doing more harm than good for the students it claims to support. False Advertising and Misuse of Government Funds The program has repeatedly made unfulfilled promises, frustrating students and their families. It advertises opportunities that aren't delivered and serious concerns about the misuse of government grants meant to support educational goals. The need for more transparency in how funds are utilized calls into question the program's integrity and commitment to its mission. Leadership Concerns: A Director Unfit for the Role The current leadership is part of the problem. The director exhibits behaviors that reflect a narcissistic attitude and a "white savior" complex, treating students as if they owe her for services provided through public funding. As someone who understands the importance of culturally competent and empathetic leadership, I find this approach deeply troubling. Furthermore, the director's history includes multiple HR complaints from previous employers, yet these issues must be addressed. She cannot lead a program designed to empower students from marginalized backgrounds. The Call for Change As a Latina and first-generation student, I know how much programs like Upward Bound can mean for students who need support. But to truly serve students, we need accountable, culturally sensitive, and student-focused leadership. I am calling for the immediate removal of the current director and a complete overhaul of the program to restore its integrity. Long Beach City College deserves a program that lives up to its promises and provides the resources and support it needs to succeed. It's time for change, and I urge stakeholders to act swiftly to ensure Upward Bound fulfills its true mission.

We're excited to share updated findings showing that Washington, DC’s Early Childhood Educator Pay Equity Fund has had a significant impact on the early education workforce. Thanks to the fund, the number of educators has increased, boosting employment by 7% and bringing early educator salaries in line with public school teachers in just the first year! Nearly two-thirds of DC educators say they plan to stay longer in their roles as a result of what this fund has done for their livelihood. This response certainly has been reflected in improved retention and stability in the District’s early education system. The fund is a powerful example of how targeted investment can support and retain our essential early learning workforce. If you have the authority to hire - hire Black youth en masse. "Cluster hiring", the act of hiring in groups will help offset the fact that twice as many Black students were unable to secure jobs this summer compared to the average. Why Cluster Hiring? 1. The Representation Gap Won’t Fix Itself Black professionals are still extremely underrepresented across industries. The link between students who lack experiences and adults who lack a social network and earning potential is obvious. Cluster hiring—bringing in several Black students at once—helps close that gap immediately and ensures they start with peers who share their experience, making it easier to thrive. 2. Create Spaces Where They Belong Hiring one or two diverse candidates isn’t enough. Let’s be real: Black students need environments where they don’t feel like the “only one.” Cluster hiring builds a built-in support network, helping them stay and grow. 3. The Best Talent Will Go Where They’re Wanted Right now, racialized communities are talking, socially, about which companies are serious about diversity and the lip service providers. Organizations that adopt bold strategies like cluster hiring will stand out to top talent. We’re at a turning point. This isn’t about waiting for next year’s goals—it’s about addressing the dumpster fire right now. Cluster hiring of Black students is one of the fastest, most effective ways to make meaningful change.
