What are the most important skills for plant maintenance technicians?
In my experience as a maintenance technician, I think the single most important skill is the ability to troubleshoot an issue effectively. I think this is especially important when working with large systems and machines. Having the skill to break a machine down into smaller sections, identify the problem part or area, and use the correct testing methods to verify the diagnosis, has really been the key to my success. I would recommend focusing on a process that works for you as an individual and the time it takes to get machines back into production will gradually decrease. Using tools like a CMMS or maintenance log have also been helpful throughout my career, as knowing the prior issues and corrective actions can greatly reduce downtime.
