Seeing a LOT of impersonation calls... fake warrants, fake IRS calls and now fake CISA calls. Follow your intuition - if it seems out of the blue, threatening, asking for money or too good to be true, be wary. The criminals play on your emotions with threats and urgency. • Do not pay the caller. • Take note of the phone number calling you. • Hang up immediately. • If they are pretending to be from CISA - Validate the contact by calling CISA at (844) SAY-CISA (844-729-2472) or report it to law enforcement.

Thanks to the Bonney Lake Senior Center and City of Bonney Lake Police Department/Community Safety Officers for inviting me to present on being safe and secure online for National #CyberSecurityAwareness month. Center for Cyber Safety and Education for the material, and Fortinet for the volunteer time. It is heartbreaking and gut-wrenching to stand in front of a group and hear a few older adults share and relate to scams or fraud they have fallen victim to. As security professionals, it is important to talk not just to businesses about securing their infrastructure/data but ALSO to our community, family, and friends. Use the opportunities of being your family's "tech support" to educate and spread awareness. Top Tips (shortlist): 1. Think before you click. 2. Have a healthy skepticism – ask yourself if it is too good to be true. Trust your gut in these situations. 3. Create Strong and Unique passphrases for every site you use. 4. Be mindful of e-mail and phone call fraud attempts. 5. Scammers create a sense of urgency. Pause, take a deep breath, think about the situation, and contact a family member or friend directly to talk about the situation. 6. A real person wouldn't ask for an urgent payment such as a large bank withdrawl, giftcards/Apple payment. Hang up the phone, call the person, bank directly to verify the validity. 7. Set up a code word with your family. Only you and your family will know. If you have fallen victim, know that you are not alone. Authorities and banks can help you get out of your situation. You have to talk and tell someone. It might not feel very comfortable to tell someone, but know that scammers emotionally manipulate you along with your feeling of cognitive dissonance wanting to accept the situation and not report it. What to do: 1. File a report with your local police department. 2. Report it to the FBI at https://www.ic3.gov/ and at https://lnkd.in/gX-mMAZq 3. Talk to friends about what happened and make sure they know what to do if something like this happens to them.

🅰️: My interest in security started with fraud prevention, then I landed my first capital-S Security role after completing the Evolve Security Academy bootcamp. Following four years as a Network Security Analyst digging into network sensor metadata and full packet captures, and a year doing professional services on everything from SSO to cloud security system to WAF to DLP, I most recently empowered managed SOC clients and analysts in multiple EDRs and CrowdStrike LogScale as a Security Operations Engineer. ❓: Why did you choose to work at Echelon? 🅰️: Even prior to being scouted by CEO Dan Desko, I was a reader of Cyber Intelligence Weekly and familiar with this team’s voices in cybersecurity. Echelon’s clever consultants, core commitments to security and privacy, and professional services partnership with CrowdStrike made the choice easy. ❓: What does a typical day at work look like for you? 🅰️: My first week at Echelon was out of the ordinary, heading out to Vegas for CrowdStrike talks and training at Fal.Con 2024. Following that stellar introduction, I have been contributing my defensive security expertise to the team and continuing my deep-dive into the CrowdStrike platform for clients implementing CrowdStrike LogScale and Next-Gen SIEM. ❓: What is something you want to fix in the field of cybersecurity? 🅰️: Bruce Schneier called it when he said complexity is the worst enemy of security. Simplicity is sustainability, and anything I do to make security easier for clients and coworkers today is a win for tomorrow. ❓: What do you like to do in your free time? 🅰️: I run horror and sci-fi movie marathons at Chicago’s Davis Theater and volunteer as Head of Safety for the cyberdefense-focused Blue Team Con. ❓: If you were in a zombie apocalypse, what character would you be and who would you want on your zombie fighting team? 🅰️: Hard to top Lionel from Peter Jackson’s Braindead coming in clutch with a lawnmower against a room full of zombified Kiwi partygoers. For my team I would take Ash from Evil Dead, Guitar Wolf from Wild Zero, Regina and Samantha from Night of the Comet, Re-Animator Herbert West, and the Scooby Gang – because what is the point of surviving a zombie apocalypse if you are not having fun?
