Fundraisers are often told they need to bring in money, without regard to relationships. Experienced fundraisers know they first need to build relationships, and that relationships are built on trust. Now, it's true that both efforts lead to transactions. But *using relationships* without building trust leads to transactions that are rarely transformative, have a low ceiling for impact, and are ultimately relationship-killers. Internal organization within nonprofits happens when workers' basic needs are not being met. While there are many ways to look at this, I for one see it as a failure of leadership and culture, as people must be fairly compensated for their work for a nonprofit to do the bare minimum in terms of impacting their respective community.
