The Board governs the works of the staff and serves as an adjudicatory body for disputes between candidates and staff.

Observing the complex challenges in audit reviews of credit card contributions to candidates motivated the Board to approve the NYC Votes project. Tipping Point Partners, Pivotal, and Method partnered with the CFB on a pro bono basis to use technology to enhance the connections between candidates and voters and to remove friction between candidates and regulators. The software we created formed the foundation of what is now NYCVotes.org and Voting.NYC.

  • City Hall Spurns Technology That Could Save New York's Abused Children

    Crain's New York Business

The preventable death of a child from abuse or neglect is a potent symbol of government failure. But it’s a failure of leadership when caseworkers are blamed despite their not having proven and relatively low-cost technology that could have helped save that child.

  • Here's How NY Protects Incumbents from Citizen and How to Change That

    The Daily Beast

This month, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a series of commendable proposals to modernize the state’s voting system. His “Democracy Project” would “remove unnecessary barriers that prevent participation in elections” by opening voting sites for more than one day, creating an automatic voter registration system and permitting voter registration on Election Day. This makes for good political theater, since there is little chance the state legislature will do the right thing.

New York State ranks an abysmal 45th in America in voter participation, largely because our system is broken beyond repair and voters know it. It’s not that people don’t want to vote. A Gordian knot of pervasive and insidious problems have been written into laws and regulation that will require systemic reform at the state level.

For tech startups, the company is indistinguishable from its product since the organization is built around that product from Day One. Hyper-growth startups find success a double-edged sword: they must prevent bursting at the seams while continually transforming a product organization to stay one step ahead of double-digit growth.

Legacy enterprises start at the other end of the spectrum. Already large, enterprises are challenged with the transformation of heavy IT organizations into the nimble hearts of living digital businesses. Their struggle is to become more like startups: to go from massive projects that support operations to smaller products that are the operations.

But both seek the same end goal through digital transformation: to build coherent product organizations that propel the business forward.

With NYC Votes, the CFB gains cutting-edge technology to further CFB'S mission to increase voter participation and strengthen the role of small contributors in New York City election campaigns.

The project applies 21st century convenience and interactivity to the relationship between voters and candidates. It is a simple idea that has the potential to permanently transform the way voters interact with their government.

NYC Votes launched in 2013 and in the 2017 elections has processed over 60% of small dollar contributions.

NYC Votes was designed by Method and built by Pivotal Labs. NYC Votes will be open-sourced, in the hope that other government can apply the technologies created here to increase voter engagement in their own jurisdictions.
