Texas A&M, for example, made headlines in 2022 when they secured the top recruiting class, largely attributed to the school's ability to offer substantial NIL opportunities through its collective, the 12th Man Foundation. Similarly, Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava reportedly signed a deal worth $8 million with the Spyre Sports Group, an NIL collective that pools funds from boosters to offer recruits lucrative financial packages. This massive deal was instrumental in luring Iamaleava to Tennessee and is seen as a blueprint for other schools hoping to use NIL to secure top talent. 2. The Growing Influence of NIL Collectives NIL collectives have emerged as powerful tools in recruiting, particularly at schools with active and well-funded booster networks. These collectives are now pivotal in recruitment strategies across programs like Texas A&M, Miami, and Georgia, creating a quasi-salary structure for athletes. 3. Concerns About Competitive Parity The introduction of NIL has sparked significant concerns about the widening gap between wealthy programs and smaller schools. Programs like Alabama, Texas, and Georgia, which have deep-pocketed booster networks and corporate connections, can offer athletes far more lucrative NIL deals than smaller schools. For example, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe has secured deals with major brands like Beats by Dre, Rhoback, and HEYDUDE Shoes, thanks to the school's expansive NIL reach. His deals, worth an estimated $1.6 million, showcase how wealthier programs use NIL to create an edge in recruiting. 4. Retention of Players Through NIL Beyond recruiting, NIL deals have also played a key role in keeping players in school longer. A notable example is Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, who continues to rake in lucrative NIL deals, including a recent partnership with Hulu. Ewers, with over 15 NIL deals to his name, has earned more than $1 million in endorsements, which provides him the financial flexibility to continue playing at the college level while honing his skills for the NFL. 5. Recent High-Profile NIL Deals Shedeur Sanders, quarterback at Colorado and son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, recently signed a landmark deal with Nike, becoming the first college athlete to partner with the brand. This deal further cements Sanders as a major figure in college football and the NIL ecosystem. Meanwhile, Arch Manning, the heir apparent Texas quarterback and member of the famous Manning family, has a valuation of $2.8 million and recently signed a deal with Panini America, a sports collectibles company.

🗣️ Current Student Managers aspiring to become GAs next year here is a step by step plan to put yourself ahead of the competition for those positions! 1. Set up Zoom calls with College Coaches or DOBO’s once a week starting now through April 1st of next year! 📅 If you start now you can make 32 New Connections! 2. Create an Excel spreadsheet to track networking contacts you make and ensure you have follow-up touchpoints. 📊 3. Follow up touchpoints being: Send thank you cards after the call, sending a card during the holiday season, wishing them best of luck for their first game or starting conference play… (if you have the funds, add a $5 Starbucks gift card. That surprise and delight moment makes you more memorable!) 📝 4. Once April comes around plan on attending the @WBCA1981 convention! Before you go make sure to contact all the new connections you made and setup a brief in person meeting. 5. Learn a new skill that can immediately impact a program… The most important now is graphic design! So practice Photoshop skills for 30 minutes, 4 nights a week for the next 8 months. 🎨🖥️ By April you should be able to make a recruiting graphic that is decent enough to say you have some graphic skills! 6. Be great where you are! On time, always learning, over-communicate your goals with your staff! Your current coaches will be your biggest advocates if you work hard for them! 🏀 If you are a current student-athlete: Make sure you register for the @WBCA1981 ‘So You Want to be a Coach’ program! 💯 I feel like these participants always land! But would also be a good idea to knock out the steps above!

Partitioned Local Depth of NFL Teams' Draft Strategies: Analyzing every draft NFL draft pick since the 2000 season, this plot helps visualize similarities and differences between NFL teams' draft day strategies. Teams closely linked draft similar positions at similar values. The farther apart teams are, the more distant their positional draft strategies are. Last year's Super Bowl teams KC and SF are shown to be closely linked. Last night they both drafted WRs with their first-round picks. ARI and PIT, two teams with a large distance between them, used their first-round picks on a WR and OT respectively, continuing their difference in philosophy. DAL and PHI are closely linked so it's unsurprising that both teams used their 2023 first-round picks on the same position of DT. Many things contribute to what player is drafted and when. Despite ownership, coaching, and managerial changes, trends and patterns can be seen over the 23-year period between teams.

The NCAA and every Power 5 conference agreed to settle in the House v. NCAA settlement. The new era of revenue sharing with college athletes is set to begin in 2025. $22 million is the cap for the first year. It will increase by 4% annually, and as TV contracts are updated it will likely increase by more. The repost and article do a job of detailing different aspects of the settlement and various subjects to consider such as Title IX, employment, NIL collectives, and the transfer portal. One thing that stood out to me was the last few sentences of the article: “As part of the settlement, a school is expected to have the ability to purchase a player’s exclusive NIL rights — a significant and possibly binding deal and one that would eliminate all third-party payment as well.” Recently, an attorney told me that you should never sign an exclusive deal. In some cases, I might disagree. But this is not one of them. In the NCAA’s and conferences’ attempt to restrict NIL collectives from making additional payments to college athletes, it seems they’re still attempting to violate antitrust laws. Perhaps this is why they continue to fight and ask congress for antitrust exemption. And perhaps the NCAA and the Power 5 conferences’ stance is that, “if we’re sharing the revenue with you athletes as an NIL payment, then you don’t need any additional NIL payments from third parties.” If a player can make additional money from his NIL, shouldn’t he be allowed. If this is instituted, I wonder if this will be the standard mandated to follow in the revenue-sharing era, or will schools have the flexibility to not issue exclusive NIL contracts? It would certainly give a school an advantage to not issue exclusive NIL deal. It’ll be interesting to see. #ncaa #collegeathletics #collegeathletes #sportslaw #antitrustlaw #NIL
