Why your glutes aren't growing ⬇️ To optimize hypertrophy you need to follow these basic principles: 1) 10-20 sets per week of glute max exercises. Ideally spaced out 2x per week instead of 1x per week 2) You need adequate caloric intake and protein intake to optimize muscle hypertrophy. 3) You must work in an RPE range of 6-8 on most days (my ebooks go into depth on what this means). If you aren't working at a hard enough intensity than you likely will not optimize muscle growth. If you constantly go to failure meaning you work until you physically can't lift the weight again you may be worsening your results as well as this could fatigue your central nervous system impeding workouts in the future. Other variables that you should consider to further optimize muscle growth: • Sleep! (7-9 hours is ideal for most people) There is solid evidence that shows lack of sleep reduces fat loss and muscle growth and increases your risk of injury... it's important so don't gloss over it. • Stress management. Too much daily stress can negatively impact recovery • High quality food. • Adequate water intake •Better exercise selection. This can be dependent on the person based on anatomy, injury history and preferences. There isn't one perfect exercise but there definitely are better exercises you may not be doing or not doing as well to optimize growth. BRADY HOLMER: One of the most interesting tidbits I pulled from @doctorinigo et al.'s new paper comparing sedentary vs. moderately trained adults. The CRAZY difference in fuel utilization and lactate production during exercise. For the active group (A, C, E), as exercise starts, their lactate levels are low and their fat oxidation rates are high (panel A). As exercise intensity increases, lactate levels naturally rise and fat oxidation levels naturally fall, but fat oxidation never reaches zero, even at the participants’ peak power output at the end of the test (when they reached VO2 max). In panel C, there's the expected rise in carbohydrate oxidation and the fall in fat oxidation during the graded exercise test. The “crossover point” (when carbohydrate and fat oxidation meet) occurs right around 175 Watts — 70% of their maximal intensity. The sedentary group (B, D, F) began the exercise test with higher blood lactate levels and almost half the rate of fat oxidation (panel B) compared to the active participants. The sedentary participants eventually bottom out their fat oxidation rates at a power output of around 175 Watts. Even more interesting is the fact that the “crossover point” for carbohydrate and fat oxidation in the sedentary participants happens almost immediately after the test begins — less than 100 Watts! (panel D) Carbohydrates become the predominant fuel source at an intensity corresponding to 30% of their maximal power output. This indicates a profound lack of metabolic flexibility.
