More and More Nonprofits Are Putting Themselves Up for Adoption Having failed to: ⏹ Break themselves of transactional fundraising ⏹ Understand that organizational needs don't get met by pleading ⏹ Have listened to their donors or their advancement staff ⏹ Realize their CFO is not in touch with the pulse of philanthropy ⏹ Disabuse board members of dated or naive fundraising assumptions ⏹ Provide benefits of community or other important psychic benefits to donors More and more nonprofits have or are putting themselves up for adoption by multimillionaires or billionaires. In many cases, it's already working. They are relying on 1% of their donors to provide 90% or more of their annual support. Many are asking their fundraising staff why they haven't talked one of the big billionaires into adopting them, whether it is McKenzie, Oprah, Bill, Warren or Michael. They might improve their chances by turning their fundraising strategies into targeted adoption appeals, something like: Wanted: Kindhearted billionaire or a few multimillionaires to adopt cuddly-wuddly, frisky, often delusional (college, university or nonprofit) that would rather be sitting in your lap than playing outside with mean donors who won't give them what they want when they want it. Looking for sympathetic owner who will attend to the creature comforts and endow their future so they don't have to plan strategically and ask themselves why they have been hemorrhaging donors for decades. If you love cats - (unlike dogs who think, "You do everything for me, you must be God", cats conclude, "You do everything for me, I must be God" - you'll love us. We like to purr as we claw your flesh.

Last week, the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy and GivingTuesday released the Q1 2024 Fundraising Effectiveness (FEP) report. Though this quarter’s report still highlights some well-known areas of concern, there is one major bright spot — a 4.1% increase in dollars raised. Advancement Survey Results Mirror Donor Desires and Frustrations It's eerie how often it happens. We interview or survey advancement staff as a part of an organizational assessment, then do the same with donors. There's almost a complete overlap in their responses. Even when we just do advancement staff interviews, we can compare the results with tons of donor surveys done for other clients. Both advancement staff and donors want: More complete, compelling, concise, hype-free information about mission in action Encouraging, emblematic stories about human differences being made Exposure to and dialogue those on the front lines of mission delivery To be actively engaged in improving mission delivery To be treated as partner, not lectured, cajoled, condescended to or be given only the most self-glorifying parts of the story In other words, a good staff survey will predict levels of donor satisfaction and dissatisfaction - and reveal what it will take to build a stronger community of shared purpose. When we see high levels of staff frustration, if not disenchantment about leadership, the lack of dedication to mission, or exploitive expectations visited on them, we know donor relations will suffer. Good people feel comprised when they are expected to treat donors as they themselves would not wish to be treated. They struggle to ask for commitments when they feel their own commitment slipping. They can't sell what they are buying. Nor should we want them to. We don't want advancement represented by ethically hollowed out drones. We've long know the connection between staff turnover and donor loss but it's too simplistic to say we lose donors because of staff turnover. We lose both at the same time because of the lack of organizational accountability, human consideration, depth of commitment and strategic imagination.
