A lot of beginning journalists have trouble coming up with stories outside of the daily grind stuff. In most cases, they are thinking big when they should be thinking small or they are thinking too complex when they should be thinking simple. During his campaign in 1912, Theodore Roosevelt printed 3 million pamphlets with his electoral offer and his photo, but that picture belonged to Moffet Studios, so Roosevelt hadn’t the copyright permission. He could be sued by Moffet Studios (1 dollar for each picture = 3 million dollars = 80 million dollars in 2023). The point is that Moffet Studios didn’t know that the pamphlets were already printed. Facing a dilemma, Roosevelt’s team decided to assign the photographer the most important role in the negotiation, the hero of the film. What does this hero want? To be famous? So they sent a telegram to Moffet Studios: “We are planning to distribute many leaflets with Roosevelt’s picture on the cover. It will be great publicity for the studio whose picture we use. How much will you pay us to use yours? Reply immediately”. Moffet Studios replied soon: “We have never done this before, but under the circumstances we would be pleased to offer you $250”. In every #negotiation we are going to have people in front of a problem to solve. Trade routes have been an integral part of human civilization for thousands of years, connecting people and cultures across the globe. While Europe and Asia had the Silk Road and Spice Trade, Australian First Nations peoples also had their own trade routes along overland pathways. These routes connected First Nations groups throughout the entire landscape of Australia, including the Torres Strait Islands. Routes intersected at significant sites such as waterholes, rivers, and places created by the spirit ancestors. In Queensland, First Nations trade has a strong history from the Torres Strait of north Queensland to the Channel Country of south-west Queensland. This is part of a complex First Nations trading system for tens of thousands of years with hundreds of people gathered at places like Wirrarri (Birdsville) to trade for weapons, grinding stones, ochre, and pituri. Murrandoo Yanner, a First Nations leader from the Ganggalida nation, Mungubie (Burketown) North Queensland, talked about the tradition and history of trading: "We had our domestic trade routes that went north, south, east and west, my people the Ganggalida traded for oysters, sea turtle and dugong from the north and in return we had goanna and turkey. We went to Normanton for gidgee lancewood and heavy wood for spears and clap sticks, we went west to Garawa for spear flints and stuff. We went south to the Waanyi and we also traded for a stone axe from the Kalkadoons". This artwork will represent a history of trade, community and connection across Queensland, demonstrating that Trade and Investment Queensland is just one modern step in a journey of First Nations trade that has taking place for 60,000 years.

The Graffiti Tunnel under Waterloo Station in London is a long tunnel that has been transformed by some amazing (and legal) graffiti of all kinds, large and small. The word itself goes back via Latin to Greek meaning 'little scratches' and describes the particular scrawls and pictures put onto walls. After seeing the Graffiti Tunnel in London, I became interested in the art form more generally, how it can be controversial, meaningful, and playful; legal and illegal. I decided to take my town of St Neots as an example, to learn more. In my next posts I'll show some of my findings, some of which may be quite surprising.
