Join us on 23 January for our upcoming event ‘Youth support for democracy in Europe’, where we will unveil the findings of a survey analysing the attitudes of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds toward democracy. ➡ https://lnkd.in/eGJbTFQK What do they think of democracy? Can the relationship between young people and democracy be improved? What needs to be done to integrate young people and protect democracy? We’ll explore these questions alongside Fondation Jean-Jaurès, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Szociális Demokráciáért Intézet and Fundacion Felipe González and discuss how to address young people’s aspirations, hopes, and concerns about democracy, particularly focusing on young Europeans’ preferences for future policies. Our upcoming policy study ‘How young people facing disadvantage view democracy in Europe‘ is the result of a 18-month research project. We captured the perspectives of over 100 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds across five diverse countries —🇭🇺 Hungary, 🇮🇪 Ireland, 🇫🇷 France, 🇵🇱 Poland, and 🇪🇸 Spain. Complemented by insights from over 50 experts in politics, youth work, and academia, the policy study analyses the attitudes of young people toward democracy to find out what can be done to create a closer and better connection to democracy 📌 Save the date 📅 23 January 🕛 12:00 - 15:00 📍 FEPS HQ, Brussels ✍️ https://lnkd.in/eGJbTFQK

Have you read Michelle Goldberg’s piece “Where Has All the Left-Wing Money Gone?” in the New York Times? Goldberg’s article uplifted the Bat Signal memo penned by Movement Voter Project's Billy Wimsatt about the crisis we face in progressive fundraising and philanthropy. TMC contributed to Billy’s memo with a supplemental memo sharing our perspective on the funding shortfall progressive organizations are experiencing. If either of those pieces raised red flags for you, join us tomorrow at 5 pm PT/8 pm ET for the first in our Forging Our Future workshop series, State of Our Movement. https://lnkd.in/eAd_nrVi State of Our Movement will feature speakers with crucial takes sharing in-depth information on the state of national, state-based, and local progressive organizing ecosystems as well as the state of money, infrastructure, and our people. In the comment section of Goldberg’s article, a common refrain among those who are issues-aligned with progressive causes is that they feel exhausted by the culture and messaging that has dominated our fundraising ecosystem. As Working Families Party’s Maurice Mitchell shares, “We and others in the field have argued that, long term, it’s disastrous, because you don’t build a trusting base.” We’re really excited that Maurice will be joining us tomorrow evening to share more of his expertise during our review of the national landscape of organizing from the 2022 midterms to present. When we said in a previous post that the antidote for disconnection is community and the path forward is together, we meant it. Trust and community have to be at the heart of what we do — which means no more exploitative emails, parachuting in and out of marginalized communities for votes without dedicating our resources to long-term liberation, or acting like oil companies in the progressive ecosystem. TMC members made over 194 million voter outreach attempts during the 2022 midterms. And they did that with help from TMC to ensure their texting programs were 10DLC compliant. With phone records we’ve deduplicated across data sources and cross-referenced for disposition. By asking one another for best practices on double opt-in email acquisition and list-building. But right now, it’s clear the good faith efforts of many progressive organizations are being overshadowed. We know there’s another way forward, and it starts with organizing our resources to fuel a culture of sustainable power building in our communities, not extraction. If you’re in, we’ll see you tomorrow. Links to all referenced publications in comments!

The next democratic paradigm: shifting power to new democratic institutions. Looking forward to talking about DemocracyNext’s work at today’s event hosted by Demos Miriam Levin as part of their Collaborative Democracy Network activities. I’ll be sharing 3 things about DemNext’s work: 1 . Our role as the international research & learning hub on democratic innovation and deliberative democracy (the work Ieva Cesnulaityte has been leading to develop our Assembly Guide and forthcoming virtual learning program) 2. Pushing systemic change: The key ideas behind our work on democratising city planning (led by James MacDonald-Nelson in collaboration with our International Task Force) - and next steps. We had 21 cities from 17 countries apply to implement the ideas! Watch this space. 3. Pushing innovation in the field: Our collaboration with the MIT Center for Constructive Communication on tech-enhanced citizens’ assemblies is about using tech to improve deliberative quality, strengthen trust, and establish better public archives. After our MIT Student Assembly, watch this space re pilots in the field! Looking forward to exchanging with Lisa Witter from Apolitical Foundation and Camden Council leader Georgia Gould, who are both doing incredible work and leading change 🙌 https://lnkd.in/diKMWbWK
