Learning Journey on Green Transition & Strategic Stakeholder Engagement in Utrecht, Netherlands 🇳🇱
Last week, I had the opportunity to participate in a learning journey in Utrecht with the Akordi founders, staff members, and steering group - an inspiring group of insightful people.
We delved into strategic stakeholder engagement and consensus building in the green transition and environmental conflicts. A key highlight was learning about the strategic stakeholder engagement process, case examples, success stories, and lessons learned from the Netherlands and the US.
Key Takeaways:
❇ The importance of opening bottlenecks in the green transition in a sustainable and just manner. Ensuring and strengthening social acceptance of the green transition is crucial.
❇ Social innovations based on the strategic stakeholder engagement are needed. They provide tools for companies, public officials, local communities, decision-makers, and CSOs. There are many success stories that highlight mutual benefits and preventing or mediating conflicts. This journey emphasized the need for new capabilities, innovative and systemic thinking, leadership, pilot projects, and potentially new regulations.
❇ We also explored successful strategies regarding the offshore wind policy in the Netherlands. Stakeholder engagement is an integral part of the overall offshore wind program. The Ministry of Economic Affairs & Climate Policy has a well-resourced, dedicated stakeholder engagement team. It significantly reduces delays and failures in projects due to insufficient stakeholder engagement. The government provides consenting, grid connections, and comprehensive site data. Permit conditions and grid connection availability are known to investors, with site data readily accessible.
Special thanks to Akordi, Jonna Kangasoja, Peltonen Lasse, Emma L., Dr. Minna Näsman, steering committee Touko Sipiläinen, Taru Tujunen, Johanna Kentala-Lehtonen, Teppo Säkkinen and the great facilitators Marc Wesselink and Mart Scheepers, WesserlinkVanZijst and David Fairman, Consensus Building Institute for an enriching experience.
