This week we bring you another Transfer-to-Action Fellowship project success story from our alumna, Bruna Arruda. She participated in the UNEP/UNESCO/BMUV International Short Course on Sustainability for Food Systems and Forest Products: The Role of Consumption and Production (SC86). Our world is facing food insecurity at an alarming rate. According to the 2023 Global Report on the Food Crisis (GRFC), more than a quarter of a billion people in 58 food crisis countries/territories were acutely food insecure and in need of urgent food assistance in 2022. This is the highest number in the seven-year history of the GRFC report. Today, more than ever, we need to adopt sustainable food production and consumption practices and engage the future generation in transformative learning to understand the importance of growing their own food. Bruna's project helps schools in São Paulo, Brazil to learn about soil use, food production and consumption through the implementation of vegetable gardens. School children are empowered and supported to learn to produce and consume their own food in a sustainable way, instilling environmental awareness and healthy eating habits. The project focuses on the concept of "learning by doing" and encourages environmentally friendly civic practices that are conducive to dynamic, participatory, enjoyable and inclusive pedagogical work. Watch Bruna's project video and get inspired to start your own vegetable garden. In a world seeking sustainable food solutions, Singapore is setting an inspiring example with its "30 by 30" vision. Picture this: We're 7 years away from Singapore's 2030 aim of producing 30% of its nutritional needs locally. An ambitious goal of self-sufficiency? Not exactly, it's a massive commitment to reduce food imports and embrace sustainable practices. Vertical/urban farms and aquaculture systems are central to this transformation. These innovative methods include space optimisation, reduced water use, and minimising environmental impact. But it's not purely just technology; it's also about cultivating a thriving food ecosystem. Singapore supports research, startups, and urban farming initiatives to make this vision a reality. Through collaboration, innovation, and a strong commitment to sustainability, Singapore is on its way to a more resilient and greener food future – and we want to be part of the roadmap 💚

🌱 Sustainability 🌱 What does it means for DMNP in 2024 ? Recently, we published an article detailing some of the different actions we lead both on the ground and in our processes to proactively develop a sustainable approach in our business. Some highlights: - How our Farmers’ Association in Madagascar is impacting the living conditions locally? - Why do we consider traceability and sustainability certifications essential? - Which social initiatives do we keep on supporting for 2024? - How do we export our practices on a larger scale? Each step we take reinforces our commitment to creating a more sustainable and equitable world, with more projects in preparation which we will share in due time. 📰 SUSTAINABILITY NEWS 📰 In this week’s newsletter…Our June Members Monthly Meetup looked at food-sector reputation risk, if produce comes from illicitly-deforested land! Things have shifted from just an ethics call to a business-safety one, under the new EU Deforestation Regulation. Big thanks to Adrian Copeland, CEO of Sodexo Hong Kong for sharing his insights, and to his company for playing host! At the World Benchmarking Alliance conference in Bangkok, I learned that some regard sustainability as an attempt by the rich world to hold back the developing part. Consensus on sustainability can’t be taken for granted! The UN says in 2022 aquaculture generated 51 percent of all seafood and edible marine plants. It’s vital the sector doesn’t unwittingly create an illusion of environmental action, and instead really helps address marine degradation. HK take note for the city’s sustainable seafood development plan! In the private sector, businesses generally are great at innovating and adapting to stay profitable. We can help your company use those skills to unlock innovation for climate and food! In other news, the European Union has taken the historic step of passing the Nature Restoration Law, which sets binding targets to revitalise degraded ecosystems.
