Support the growth of electric mobility industry and fostering innovation in Zambia

About us

The Zambian Electric Mobility Innovation Alliance (ZEMIA) is a collaborative initiative aimed at propelling the growth of the electric mobility industry and nurturing innovation within Zambia. Its primary objective is to establish a business-friendly environment that supports the industry's expansion while advocating for favorable public policies. ZEMIA employs a comprehensive multi-step approach, encompassing various aspects such as policy development, infrastructure enhancement, workforce programs, supply chain attraction, and innovation promotion, all aimed at fostering the development of a robust electric mobility ecosystem. A key focus of ZEMIA is to create an environment that encourages investment and stimulates innovation. By fostering a business-friendly climate, the alliance aims to attract both domestic and international investments in the electric mobility sector. This includes facilitating the establishment of supportive policies and regulations that promote the adoption and growth of electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and related technologies. In addition to policy advocacy, ZEMIA recognizes the importance of developing the necessary infrastructure to support electric mobility. The alliance works towards enhancing the charging infrastructure across the country, ensuring accessibility and reliability for electric vehicle owners. By expanding the charging network, ZEMIA aims to alleviate range anxiety and promote widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Furthermore, ZEMIA places great emphasis on developing programs that address the needs of the electric mobility workforce. This involves initiatives such as training and skill development programs, promoting education and research in electric vehicle technology, and fostering partnerships between academia and industry. By nurturing a skilled workforce, ZEMIA aims to support the growth of the industry and position Zambia as a center for electric mobility expertise and innovation.

  • ZEMIA's Electrifying Side Event at Future Energy Conference 2024! At the invitation of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), we had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Future Energy Conference 2024, held from 26th to 28th August 2024 at the stunning Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra, Ghana. This year’s theme, "Harnessing Africa’s Resource Wealth: Fueling Innovation for Equitable Energy Access," set the stage for thought-provoking discussions and groundbreaking ideas. ZEMIA in partnership with the Ministry of Energy, COMESA Secretariat and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa proudly hosted a side event, themed "Innovating the Future: Zambia's Energy Transition and E-Mobility Revolution," which spotlighted Zambia’s energy transition initiatives. We showcased the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), advances in electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing, innovations shaping our industries, and government policies driving these transformations. Our engaging panel, moderated by Mr. McDonald Chilepa, Lead Consultant for the ZAMBIAeMOBILIZE Project, featured an impressive lineup: Mr. Michael Mulasikwanda – Assistant Director, Ministry of Energy, Zambia Ms. Providence Mavubi – Director, Industry & Agriculture, COMESA Dr. Oliver Maponga – Economic Affairs Officer, UNECA-Southern Regional Office Mr. Kabayo Muhau – Co-Founder & President, ZEMIA Ms. Mavubi emphasized the vital need for African innovation and explained how COMESA is fostering regional initiatives that drive economic transformation and energy transition. Dr. Maponga provided deep insights into Zambia’s potential in Critical Minerals and EV Battery Manufacturing, underscoring the essential role of UNECA in supporting sustainable development across Africa. Mr. Mulasikwanda highlighted Zambia’s leadership in energy transition, presenting the Integrated Resource Plan and the introduction of Net Metering, which is set to revolutionize solar rooftop systems and boost electricity access for Zambians. Mr. Muhau inspired the audience with his vision for e-Mobility in Zambia, showing how it can empower youths and SMEs, and drive Africa toward economic independence and industrialization. Exciting innovations like EV battery swapping and Vehicle-to-Grid technology are poised to lead Africa into a future of energy sovereignty. The discussions were nothing short of electrifying! We explored how Innovation, Research, and Development will drive Africa's energy systems and the e-Mobility revolution. Special thanks to our incredible moderator, Mr. Chilepa, for steering such a dynamic conversation, and to the audience for their insightful questions. Special gratitude to the ACEP Director Mr. Benjamin Boakye and the entire ACEP team for the opportunity given to ZEMIA and the Zambian delegation to showcase Zambia's Energy Transition and E-Mobility Revolution while Innovating the Future. • ZEMIA at the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP)'s Future Energy Conference 2024: Leading Africa's Energy Transition Future! We had the incredible honour of being invited by the Africa Centre for Energy Policy to the Future Energy Conference 2024, held from August 26th to 28th at the stunning LABADI BEACH HOTEL in Accra, Ghana! Themed “Harnessing Africa’s Resource Wealth: Fueling Innovation for Equitable Energy Access,” the event gathered top minds from across the continent to shape the future of Africa’s energy landscape. Representing Zambia was a powerhouse delegation: Mr. Michael Mulasikwanda, Assistant Director from the Ministry of Energy; Ms. Providence Mavubi, COMESA's Director for Industry & Agriculture; Dr. Oliver Maponga from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (Southern Regional Office); and Mr. McDonald Chilepa, Lead Legal Consultant for the ZAMBIAeMOBILIZE Project being implemented by ZEMIA. Our very own Kabayo Muhau, Co-Founder & President of ZEMIA, also proudly represented the Zambian Electric Mobility Innovation Alliance. ACEP is a renowned policy think tank dedicated to linking resource extraction to development through research and evidence-based advocacy, with a focus on influencing policies related to oil and gas, energy, climate change, and mining across Africa. We were thrilled to join the panel on “Innovations, Research, and Development in Africa’s Energy Systems,” moderated by Ms. Valerie Labi, Co-Founder & CEO of Wahu Mobility. The discussion kicked off with an insightful overview from Mr. Yaw Appiah Lartey, ESQ, FCCA, FCA of Deloitte Africa, framing the role of innovation, Research & development in overcoming Africa's energy challenges. The panel featured visionaries like @Prof. Francis Kemausuor of KNUST, Dr. David Ofosu-Dorte from AB & David Africa, and Dr. Riverson Oppong, PhD. Oppong from the Association of Oil Marketing Companies, alongside our very own Mr. Kabayo Muhau. Together, we delved into the real solutions that could unlock electricity for the 600m Africans still without access. Dr. Maponga and Ms. Mavubi also shone in a panel on “From Minerals to Clean Energy; Building an Integrated Regional Value Chain of Energy Transition Technologies.” The discussion was an eye-opener—a rallying cry for Africa to stop exporting raw minerals and start adding value. With electric vehicles on the rise, the continent has a golden opportunity to emerge as a manufacturing powerhouse by leveraging its rich mineral wealth. The energy, insights, and inspiration from this event were simply electric! Africa’s future is bright, and together, we can fuel that brilliance with innovation and collaboration. The conference was a resounding success and congratulations to ACEP Director, Mr. Benjamin Boakye and his Team and it's partners for hosting us and inviting the Zambian delegation. The future of Africa’s energy is bright-powered by innovation, Research & Development, collaboration, and determination!
