If you've been receiving seemingly off emails lately you're not alone. Cyber attackers have ramped up their efforts to try to infiltrate companies' internal systems and confidential data, but with the right knowledge, you can clearly see these attempts and alert the proper teams. While their tactics are ever-evolving, a few things you can be on the lookout to ensure the emails, texts and phone calls you receive are legitimate include: 1. Suspicious email addresses: Be aware of omitted or altered characters or email addresses that don't end in the company domain. 2. Generic greetings & signatures: Know that anyone who should be emailing you should have your name. While seemingly harmless, be away of greetings like “Dear valued customer” or “Sir/Ma’am” as well as signatures that can't be verified through the company's actual website or LinkedIn. 3. Spoofed hyperlinks and websites: Before you click on any link, hover over it to ensure it’s leading you to a trusted, safe location. To do so, look to see that the website they're sending you to is spelled correctly and going to the actual domain of the company. 4. Suspicious attachments: An unsolicited email that requests you to download or open an attachment is a common delivery method for malware (e.g. viruses). Also note that if the sender provides a sense of urgency about how you have to immediately download the attachment, you'll want to think twice. 5. Spelling and layout oddities: Poor grammar, sentence structure, typos and inconsistent formatting are all indicators of a possible phishing. Should you receive anything that seems like it could be phishing, DO NOT CLICK ANY LINKS and alert your IT department immediately. Today marks the start of Cyber Security Month! And while the IT community dedicates an entire month to educate the masses on cybercriminals' favorite tactics to infiltrate your systems, cybersecurity needs to be a year-round priority. Unfortunately at YBO, we've seen an uptick in phishing attempts, which means a seemingly credible entity attempts to get you to fall for their bait and let them into your systems, compromising your most sensitive information. Fortunately, we've seen that thanks to ongoing education and diligence, these attempts continue to be for not. In fact, we created this blog post to help you better understand what phishing is, what to look out for, and what to do if you think you've received a phishing attempt: https://lnkd.in/erBcjPm3 Cyber attackers may be continually trying to evolve their tactics, but Your Back Office stays committed to ensuring you have the most up-to-date information to keep you protected! #InformationSecurity #InfoSec #IT #phishing #PII #dataprotection
