"Nobody's free until everybody's free" -Fannie Lou Hamer Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, declaring the end of slavery, however it took over two years for the last enslaved people to be freed in Galveston, TX on June 19th, 1865.
