The Kirkpatrick Model is one of our favorite frameworks to evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and educational initiatives - I was surprised to learn that most organizations still rely on anecdotal feedback and sign in rates as proxies for training success metrics! Here's how the Kirkpatrick Model is layered: 1) Reaction: How engaging and relevant the training was to learners 2) Learning: Whether learners acquired the intended knowledge and skills 3) Behavior: Whether learners can apply their new skills in real-life situations 4) Results: Whether the training program had a positive impact on the organization Over 80% of enablement leaders we speak with are stuck on layers (1) and (2) of the model - reaction and learning. Measuring ongoing behavior change (retention) and ROI metrics (results) is the hardest piece in any training program. Working at Nike has been my childhood dream - it was beyond bucket listy to be the guest speaker at the Nike leadership offsite. A few takeaways - 1) The campus is a sports museum. Buildings are named after Tiger Woods and Serena Williams and Lebron - you can smell ‘just do it’ in the air 2) Nike’s single minded focus on winning is inspiring. Ebbinghaus's Forgetting Curve haunts every training and enablement leader. Within an hour of learning new information, employees tend to forget over 50% of it. Within 24 hours, this can increase to 70%. By the end of the week, people tend to forget 75% of what they’ve learned. German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus came up with this concept in the 1980s but it holds even more relevance today. Learners are overloaded with new information - with onboarding, new product certifications, revised GTM strategies in a quickly evolving AI first world it's very hard to keep track of the latest company talk track or best practice. “Drinking water from a firehose” “Getting dropped off the deep end” Both are phrases I’ve heard and used to describe starting at a new company - phases I’ve found to be completely accurate. My saving grace when starting out has been the people: 👯 ⚡Having peers learning alongside you! Chit chats over the coffee machine and some friendly competition 🤼 ⚡ Fantastic leadership to guide you through the ocean of new information and show a path to action and results (shoutout Jake Bradley for being not only a great manager but a fantastic onboarder) So when brainstorming an onboarding plan I had my work cut out for me. In startup land: How do I create a collaborative environment when most of my team is remote? I don’t have the answers but here's what I have learned so far: 💻 Having a laptop ready = important (whoops but thanks Benjamin Kim for rolling with the punches)  🥇 Scheduling 1|1 time with team members = gold  💜 Clear expectations around expected inputs(KPIs) and outputs (OKRs) =  a recipe for self-starters to hit the ground running  🔑 The balance between self-guided practice and synchronous learning is key My plan for now - keep on learning, failing, and growing
