The UN is calling for the use of recycled #concrete to cut emissions and create a “circular” approach in #construction that reduces waste. This recommendation and others are outlined in a new report by the UN Environment Programme & Yale CEA. https://hubs.li/Q025nrcv0

Today at #COP28! Lead author, Anna Dyson [Founding Director, Yale CEA and Design for Freedom Working Group member] and Dr. Mae-ling Lokko [Willow Technologies Ltd and Yale School of Architecture], both of whom we were honored to welcome as speakers for our 2023 Design for Freedom Summit, shared the critical findings from the momentous UN Environment Programme/Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) and Yale CEA Report, Building Materials and the Climate: Constructing the Future, as part of the Yale School of the Environment's Planetary Solutions Panel. Another milestone in the movement to transform the built environment!

Our Design for Freedom Ethical Supply Chain Workshop, co-hosted with Turner Construction Company and the U.S. State Department Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations [OBO] at Grace Farms a few weeks ago, affirmed large-scale industry stakeholders working in tandem. With industry experts across public and private sectors–from large manufacturers and technology partners to designers, higher education, and government agencies–we addressed supply chain transparency, how building material choices impact the climate, financial considerations for building and maintaining responsible supply chains, the market shift to ethical decarbonization, and more. “With a portfolio of projects in design and construction across the globe, OBO is working to move the needle of institutional change by partnering with our stakeholders to expand the industry’s usage of ethically-sourced building materials," said Curtis Clay [U.S. State Department Bureau of Overseas Building Operations ; Design for Freedom Working Group member]. "This workshop accelerated the movement towards this aim and provided OBO with a clearer understanding of the challenges and barriers that our private sector contractors and material suppliers face when attempting to source ethically." "Our hope is that this workshop furthers industry cooperation and alignment on the topic of advancing human rights in the entire supply chain, from extraction of materials, manufacturing, transportation, installation, and operation of building components," said Jennifer Downey [Turner]. Thank you to all who attended! Speakers included Anna Dyson, [Yale CEA], Maha Khan [Finance Against Slavery & Trafficking], Shawn MacDonald [Verité], Amy Musanti [ASSA ABLOY Group], Amy O’Neill Richards [State Dept. Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Person], Christopher Sharples [SHoP Architects], Peter Swartz [Altana Technologies], and more. As our CEO and Founder, Sharon Prince noted, "By inviting large suppliers, manufacturers, and developers to the table with Turner and OBO, we can start to level set a fair and resilient building material supply chain among competitors and create a more humane future.” Read the press release for more details and insights, including from Michael Bruskin [Turner], on this important day for Design for Freedom: https://lnkd.in/gn6YHd3K Photo: Jacek Dolata
