Great to see UrbanShift and WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities in Rotterdam with Latin American Cities!
What an inspiring and informative kick-off to our Peer-to-Peer Exchange for Latin American cities on urban climate resilience and placemaking in Rotterdam! Our sessions this morning traversed the world, from the Netherlands to Brazil, exploring the growing flood risk that cities are facing and the creative ways they are adapting and transforming in the face of uncertainty. Arnoud Molenaar guided us through Rotterdam's strategic and comprehensive approach to resilience, and Nanco Dolman drew on the link between cities in the Global North and Global South to explore how solutions can translate across continents. "There is actually a huge opportunity for cities in the Global South to leapfrog ahead to a more water-resilient future. Rather than having to focus on upgrading old infrastructure—why not skip ahead and integrate green & resilient infrastructure now? Anne Loes Nillesen reminded us that cities face down a future where the need to adapt is unavoidable, we still can't forget to focus on climate mitigation. Now is the time for urban designers, planners, and leaders to get creative with how they develop projects and ensure they're delivering multiple benefits at once: they need to combat current climate challenges, help adapt to future risks, and make communities more resilient and cohesive. Urban nature-based solutions, said Pablo Lazo, are a key tool that cities are increasingly exploring and implement to improve resilience and livability. To scale them, we need better frameworks to assess and covey the multiple benefits of nature to cities. But we also have to acknowledge that some value can't be measured—it has to be felt. Here in Rotterdam, we're looking forward to a week of exploring the city's vibrant, nature-filled public spaces that are charting the city's path to a resilient future, but most importantly, are beautiful and enjoyable places for residents to gather and live. Thank you to Global Center on Adaptation for hosting our workshop today, and for Gemeente Rotterdam and Placemaking Europe for guiding our experience through this inspiring city! WRI research reveals a surprising truth: when it comes to intersections, compact design can lead to improved safety, efficiency and sustainability. Bigger is, in fact, not always better! "6 Elements To Make Streets #SaferByDesign" explains how compact intersections can transform #UrbanMobility: 🔀 Reduced Conflict Points: Fewer areas where different traffic flows intersect. 🐌 Slower Speeds, Faster Overall Movement: Counterintuitively, slightly slower. speeds at intersections can improve overall traffic flow. 👩🏽🤝👩🏻 Expanded Pedestrian Space: Reclaiming areas for people, not just vehicles. 👁️ Improved Sight Lines: Making it easier for all road users to see and be seen. 💰 Economic Boost: More pedestrian-friendly areas often lead to increased local business activity. This innovative approach to #StreetDesign reimagines intersections as spaces for people, not just vehicles, helping create safer and more livable cities. Join us for this webinar on Thursday, October 31st, #WorldCitiesDay to understand how the Systems Change Lab data on cities and the built environment can inform and galvanize your work! #SystemsChangeLab is a collaborative initiative and #opensource #data platform designed to spur action at the pace and scale needed to tackle some of the world’s greatest challenges: limiting #globalwarming to 1.5°C, halting #biodiversity loss, and building a just #economy. #Cities are often seen as a "system of systems" where other systems -- including #buildings, #land, #energy, #water, #sanitation, #waste management, and #transportation -- integrate, resulting in economies of scale and trade-offs; where built and natural infrastructure come together; where the consumption of resources and environmental impacts like pollution are concentrated, but so are economic opportunities. Inequalities in access to resources and services, lack of finance, and misalignment between national and city actors remain difficult challenges, but cities are a critical lever to meet global development and climate goals. With wide input from experts, we focus on three key "shifts" and over 20 #urban outcome indicators that can be tracked at global and national levels. Congratulations to WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities colleagues Maeve Hogel Weston and Vijay Jagannathan for the lion's share of work on this, with support from Ted Wong, Eric Mackres, Schuyler Null, Tini Tran and other World Resources Institute colleagues Rachel Jetel, Leandro Vigna, Irene Berman-Vaporis, Brynne Wilcox! Excited about this event and proud of this work! Rogier van den Berg Melanie Robinson Ani Dasgupta https://lnkd.in/d8j77ncZ
