Are you excited about the #Olympics, because we are! We are pumped for the Refugee Olympic Team competing at #Paris2024 Summer Olympics. We’re rooting for this team of world class athletes, who are also displaced people, competing this summer. We love how they represent the resilience, the strength, and the determination of refugees worldwide. Good luck to all the athletes! 📸: IOC cc: Olympic Refuge Foundation

Our summer celebration of Voices of Courage continues! Today, we are excited to introduce you to Pari Ibrahim, founder and executive director of the Free Yezidi Foundation. Born in Iraq, of Yazidi descent, Pari fled her homeland in the early 90s as a child with her family, during the Saddam Hussein regime. Today, Pari leads an organization that provides support for the Yezidi community in the wake of the 2014 ISIS genocide of Yezidis in Iraq. Her bravery and tenacity inspire us all and that's why she is one of the Women's Refugee Commission’s #35Voices. Meet Pari!

Last week, we shared with you our recent trip to Mexico - co-hosted with Washington University in St. Louis - that brought together nearly two-dozen experts to discuss the experiences of LGBTQI migrants in Mexico. Today, we share with you the collective statement that was born of that meeting. At the Women's Refugee Commission, our work starts by listening to the lived experiences of #refugees and #migrants so that their needs -- and their solutions -- are prioritized by policymakers and service providers. Our summer series— #35Voices of Courage, in honor of our 35th Anniversary, is well underway. Today, we are excited for you to meet three remarkable refugees and women's rights defenders: Yusra Mardini, a Syrian refugee who competed as a member of the first-ever Refugee Olympic Team in the Summer Olympics in 2016; Karina Ambartsoumian-Clough, co-founder of United Stateless, the first US-based organization led by stateless people advocating to end statelessness; and Pari Ibrahim, the founder and executive director of the Free Yezidi Foundation. All three women are past honorees of the Women’s Refugee Commission Voices of Courage award. You’ll also learn about four women whose contributions to WRC are so fundamental they are in our DNA: Mary Anne Schwalbe, Mary Diaz, Carolyn Makinson, and our very own Executive Director Sarah Costa. In our latest blog, the Women's Refugee Commission talks with Emem Maurus of Transgender Law Center Border Butterflies Project on challenges LGBTQI asylum seekers face at the US-Mexico border. “LGBT people are marginalized, criminalized, and persecuted in many countries around the world,” Emem says. “They leave for these reasons. We also see a reality that when countries experience instability, LGBT folk become more of a target by governments or citizens, creating more of a push factor." And, read about a recent trip to Mexico we co-hosted with Washington University in St. Louis that brought together nearly two dozen experts to discuss the experiences of LGBTQI migrants in Mexico. Access to asylum is a legal and human right - now matter who you are, where you are from, or how you identify. Full stop.

In recent years internationally acclaimed artists have performed as part of #TheLanternTour artists, a concert series that bridges music with advocacy across the US to benefit @wrcommission. We have been honored to partner with Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Sheryl Crow, and so many other music legends. The concerts showcased a unique evening of acoustic performances and artist collaborations that allow us to celebrate the power of music. That’s why we’re celebrating #TheLanternTour artists as part of our #35Voices. Read about these artists and all our #35Voices:
