🚨 Calling all writers ... 🚨 Democracy in Africa and the award winning The Continent magazine are looking for authors living in Africa for a new series on social movements and youth/popular mobilization from below. The winning pieces will be published in the Continent and then collected together in a standalone booklet. We are interested in pieces that explore why people took to the streets recently in countries such as Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda - and why they did not in some others. We are also interested in hearing more about youth movements and social movements across the continent, whether they are growing bolder and more determined, and why this might be the case. The relationship between these movements and other trends such as urbanization, improving education, and the digitization of politics is also really important. We will also be interested in pieces that reflect on the strength of civil society more broadly, especially as some have suggested that in some respects it is weaker than it has been for many years. To pitch an idea, please send us an email to [email protected] with: - the subject line "DiA/The Continent new authors" - a one paragraph summary of your idea/suggested article - a potential title for the piece - a brief CV For more on the Continent, go here: https://lnkd.in/eMX93bpN For more on Democracy in Africa, go here: https://lnkd.in/e4HJPkH7 Just to be clear, for the Continent the word length of our pieces is very short at 330 words, for which the payment is $100. Longer pieces can be posted to Democracy in Africa but please note that we do not have funds to pay authors for DiA at present. We are actively working on this. We will not be able to reply to everyone, so if you do not get a response it will mean that your proposal was not selected. We are sorry about this but it is very difficult for our small team to get back to everyone.

📢 WEBINAR | The EU's new supply chain regulations: progress and peril in promoting global sustainability 🇪🇺 The European Union has taken a pioneering role in regulating environmental and social standards within global supply chains. However, this significant shift from voluntary to mandatory measures raises important questions for the future of sustainable trade in a time of geopolitical instability. Join the debate with #MistraGeopolitics and REBALANCE: 🔍 How have business actors positioned themselves in policymaking processes? 🔍 How are different supply chain participants responding to the new EU regulations? 🔍 What potential shifts might these regulations cause in prices, purchasing practices, or the geography of global supply chains? 🔍 What are the likely consequences for human rights protection and environmental sustainability? 📆 4 September 2024 🕓 15:00 - 16:00 CEST Register 🔗 https://buff.ly/4d0Wizv Featuring Maria-Therese Gustafsson, John Murray, Daniel Kinderman, Janina Grabs, Surya Deva, TobyGardner, and Tim Bartley. #EU #regulation #SupplyChain #GlobalTrade #HumanRights #EnvironmentalSustainability
