What strategies are nurse leaders leveraging to attract and retain talent? We just published a survey with Becker's Healthcare that asked 115 chief nursing officers representing 95 health systems about the qualities, skills and certifications that are top of mind in their searches for future employees; the current challenges and successes that organizations are experiencing with nurse recruiting; and investments that hospitals and health systems are making to advance nurse recruitment and retention efforts. I’m excited to see nurse self-scheduling making a comeback, as highlighted in Becker's Hospital Review! 🏥✨ At Missoula Bone and Joint, I had the opportunity to create and build out a self-scheduling model, and the results were incredible. Just as the article mentions, we experienced high RN satisfaction and ease of use, and managers gained valuable time back from the scheduling process. One of the most rewarding aspects was seeing RNs collaborate and self-balance their schedules before submission. With clear parameters in place, they were able to see the daily needs and sign up accordingly, which fostered a strong team atmosphere and built rapport among the staff. I’m glad to share they still self schedule today! I firmly believe that self-scheduling is the future of nurse scheduling. It's a win-win for both RNs and management, creating a more harmonious and efficient workplace. 📑 Read more about the resurgence of nurse self-scheduling in the full article: https://lnkd.in/eNAztBZY #Nursing #HealthcareInnovation #SelfScheduling #Teamwork #NurseSatisfaction #RN #scheduling

The best nurse scheduling and staffing model varies based on an organization’s structure and culture. You can choose from centralized staffing, decentralized staffing, or a hybrid. No matter which model you choose, three nurse scheduling and staffing principles will improve the effectiveness of implementing and sustaining the scheduling and staffing model. 1. Obtain nurse input. When nurses have input into an organization’s scheduling and staffing processes, the model will better incorporate their needs, implementation of the model will be smoother, and nurses will be more committed to it. 2. Maximize flexibility. Scheduling and staffing flexibility allow an organization to adapt quickly to changing patient needs, including changes in patient census and acuity and varying available staff levels. 3. Prioritize transparency. Transparency and collaboration increase trust in the system and maximize scheduling and staffing issue solutions. Amid clinician staffing shortages, hospitals are looking for innovative strategies to retain staff - and flexibility might be the key. A study examining flexibility found that self-scheduling is seen by staff nurses as the most flexible work option, chosen by 59% of respondents. Self-scheduling also topped the list when nurses were asked to rank flexible work options in order of importance. The Works platform allows nurses to pick the best shifts for their unique needs based on pay, benefits, schedule, floatability, and geography to prevent burnout and reduce turnover.
