🐬 For over 15 years, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (ifaw) has been using Argos services, provided by Woods Hole Group, to understand how rehabilitated marine mammals acclimate to the wild again and are adopted back into their social networks.   🌊 Did you know because of the work by ifaw and this technology, single standing protocol has changed?   🛰 These marine mammals are tracked using a tag that can provide up-to-date positions every time the animal surfaces. When these SPOT or SPOT-like tags break the surface of the water, a wet-dry sensor recognizes that the tag is exposed to air and transmits its location. 📡 Couple this tag technology with a handheld Argos Goniometer (radio direction finder), and you can track animals regardless of satellite availability. The Argos Goniometer acquires the signal and message transmitted by the tag and provides a direction, signal strength (indication of distance), and it stores every received message from the tag (and any other tag within range) on board to be downloaded later. You can also establish a direct data feed from the Goniometer to a computer which allows for real-time data processing (with internet connectivity).   Several weeks ago, ifaw responded to the largest mass stranding event on record. Check out the video below to learn more.   🛰 Learn more about our satellite telemetry solutions: https://lnkd.in/ewaQdv8p   Or be sure to ask Thomas Gray or Julien Freville!   #Argos #Telemetry #MarineMammals #Sustainability #SpaceTechnology

It's #SharkWeek! Did you know our technology has been and will be featured throughout the week? 🦈 Sharks are within the top three marine animals tagged by Argos, partially due to their iconic nature but also because they are top, apex predators. Biologists interested in tracking their movements and habitat utilization have a variety of tools at their disposal, from transmitters that send acoustic signatures to those that communicate with Argos satellites. To collect the data and locations transmitted by Argos tags, Woods Hole Group, Inc. CLS Group (Collecte Localisation Satellites) use nine polar-orbiting satellites and a network of ground stations around the globe.   🌊 By Shark Week 2025, we will have expanded the satellite constellation by adding 25 new satellites. This significant investment into better understanding our planet's resources will provide more accurate near real-time locations at a higher frequency. Argos continues to be the only satellite system that is suitable for tracking the migrations of marine megafauna. We are looking forward to the advancements of the system and how those will contribute to further knowledge of these iconic species. A big thanks to James Sulikowski and his Marine and Coastal Opportunities - Oregon State University Sulikowski Lab! 🛰 Learn more about our satellite telemetry solutions: https://lnkd.in/ewaQdv8p Or be sure to ask Thomas Gray or Julien Freville! #Argos #Telemetry #ClimateChange #Sustainability #SpaceTechnology

🌅 Cutting carbon emissions is crucial to slow climate change, protect ecosystems, and safeguard human health and livelihoods. At Woods Hole Group and our parent company, CLS, we are pleased to be doing our part in the race to net zero. 📅 A few weeks ago, CLS President Christophe Vassal came to our Bourne office to visit staff and see the *new* DeepCLiDAR Buoy! 🌊 The buoy, designed and built by Woods Hole Group in partnership with the University of Maine, has achieved Stage 2 Carbon Trust Certification. This milestone enables CLS, a subsidiary of the French Space Agency, to offer unparalleled wind resource measurement and energy assessment solutions for the offshore wind industry. The buoy combines in-situ metocean data collection, satellite radar observations, and high-resolution wind modeling, providing essential data for securing funding for wind energy projects. The production facility in Cape Town ensures cost-effective solutions, reinforcing CLS's commitment to sustainable innovation. 🔶 Want to learn more about the DeepCLiDAR? 🌅 This week, Woods Hole Group attended the 199th Council Meeting on Oahu. Jason Surma and William O'Toole represented our team by taking questions on VMS. The purpose of this meeting was to set annual catch limits for the Main Hawaiian Islands Deep 7 bottomfish fishery for 2024-2027 and review the Marine Conservation Plan (MCP) for American Samoa for approval.   🎣 In addition to the bottomfish annual catch limit discussions, the Council will review the MCP for American Samoa, which outlines conservation and management objectives such as observer programs, marine research, conservation education, and community-based projects. The MCP is crucial for the management of foreign fishing within the U.S. exclusive economic zone (EEZ) around American Samoa and aligns with the Council’s Fishery Ecosystem Plans (FEPs).   🐠 Once the Council approves the MCP, it will be sent to the Governor of American Samoa for concurrence and then to the Secretary of Commerce for final approval. The MCP, valid for three years upon approval, can be modified and resubmitted at any time, ensuring flexibility and responsiveness to changing conditions and needs in marine conservation and management.   🐡 To learn more about how Woods Hole Group assists with sustainable fisheries through our NEMO, NAOS, and CATSAT technologies. please contact us at: https://lnkd.in/eaWfg54V

🔆 Project Spotlight: 🌊 Woods Hole Group teamed up with Fuss & O’Neill (F&O) to model and refine the final design for the Eagle Neck Creek Restoration Project in Truro, MA. They simulated the restoration benefits provided by an 8’ by 8’ box culvert under Old County Road using a hydrodynamic and salinity model, incorporating new bathymetry data and proposed channel dredging to enhance drainage. Their work included site investigations for wetland boundary delineation and sediment sampling to inform dredging and disposal options. Additionally, Woods Hole Group conducted a scour analysis and designed countermeasures to protect the culvert and surrounding areas from erosion. 🗺 The team also handled regulatory permit and environmental compliance applications, collaborating closely with local, state, and federal agencies. They prepared the necessary documentation and applications for various permits, such as the MA DEP Section 401 Water Quality Certification and the US Army Corps of Engineers Section 404/10 Permit, and ensured compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Their comprehensive approach ensured the project met all regulatory requirements and environmental standards, facilitating the successful restoration of Eagle Neck Creek. ✉ Let us know how our team can help you!
