Had a great time with some of the team at the Geological Society of America (GSA) International Connects 2024 conference in Anaheim! It’s always inspiring to engage with colleagues while discussing cutting-edge techniques and solutions for groundwater recharge, and management and planning. A special shoutout to my colleague Hemayatullah Ahmadi, Ph.D., who delivered not one, but two outstanding presentations! His insights and innovations were a highlight of the conference for me and also sparked some excellent discussions afterwards. At this year's Corporate Open House, we proudly announced the Matt Salveson Endowment Fund at Sac State, a scholarship created to honor Matt Salveson’s enduring impact on the civil engineering community. Matt has been a guiding force in our Sacramento Transportation Department and is known for his mentorship and dedication to developing future engineers. Wood Rodgers is contributing $25,000 to the endowment, and Dokken Engineering has generously added $10,000 more. This scholarship will benefit Junior and Senior Civil Engineering students at California State University-Sacramento, with a special focus on those engaged in Senior Project courses that Matt passionately instructed. Successfully presented two oral contributions at the #GSA #Connect2024 Geological Society of America in Anaheim, CA, USA. In the first talk, I discussed the potential sources of the Herat earthquakes that occurred between October 7-15, 2023, and their implications for regional active tectonics. In the second talk, I highlighted the optimal use of remote sensing and GIS in identifying active faults, with a focus on the Kabul Block, Afghanistan. A highlight of the conference was also meeting Prof. Dr. Yildirim Dilek, a leading scientist in the study of ophiolites across India, Eurasia, Arabia plates, and other regions.
