Creating A World Where All Women Are Financially Empowered

About us

OUR MISSION We empower girls and women to improve their financial health to create a more secure future for their families and communities. OUR VISION We envision a world in which all women have a financially stable life. OUR HISTORY Founding Mothers, Anita Saville & Kathy Brough, first discussed a financial education program for women living on low-incomes in 2009. As the Great Recession gathered steam, it became clear that few people had the skills to manage their money effectively. Kathy & Anita had worked together on multiple political campaigns & shared a passion for empowering women living on low-incomes. After a year of research, the Founding Mothers realized that case managers don’t have time to help their clients learn key financial skills. They determined that a sustained program that combined workshops & individualized mentoring was needed. “What if we trained volunteers for this”, one case manager said. And the idea for our program was born. Danielle Piskadlo, a longtime advocate for women’s financial empowerment, joined the team as Executive Director in 2019. In June 2022 Budget Buddies officially rebranded to Women’s Money Matters. OUR MODEL FOR SUCCESS Workshops: Guided by volunteer coaches, participants learn to use budgets, handle credit, manage bank accounts, save for larger expenses, and protect themselves against fraud. Workshops include trust-building exercises, success celebrations & coach-participant 1:1 breakout meetings. Mentoring: Personal mentoring of each participant sets us apart from other financial education programs. Each volunteer coach works solely with one participant every week to address her unique money-management goals & challenges. For some participants, this is the first time they receive personalized attention focused just on their financial & personal situation. Small Peer Groups: All Women’s Money Matters programs are hosted in intentionally small peer groups for social support, peer learning, & connection.

Ready to make a meaningful impact? Join us as a volunteer coach to support women and girls in our program reach their financial goals! Hear from those who have already made a difference: 🟢 "I am inspired by the women who want to further their financial goals. My mentee and I built a connection based on shared experience, honesty, and trust to be there for each other. We made a commitment to each other to support one another.” 🟢 "I was on the journey with my mentee step by step. I really enjoyed getting to know her as a person and her personal and financial goals. It was a very fulfilling experience knowing we were on the journey together and helped her get to her goal of making a budget. My greatest success was building a bond with someone I would have never met. I think we will be friends for a long time.” 🟢 "My favorite moment in the program is when my mentee has her 'I can do this' moment. It usually comes after we’ve set a goal, mapped out the steps to get there, and she’s made progress on a few of the steps. The goal no longer looks as intimidating as when we started, and she now feels confident that it’s achievable. That first moment of confidence in herself is such a special moment to witness and it’s the best feeling to know I helped her get there.” Sign up today and make an impact by supporting another on her financial journey! Thank you to Representative Christine Barber for her support in securing funding for financial wellness workshops for women and girls living on low incomes. As Co-Chair of the Women’s Caucus Task Force, she emphasizes collaboration and innovation. Thanks to your dedication, a $100,000 allocation in the state budget will enable Women’s Money Matters to expand services and address the needs of those on our waitlist. This essential funding will significantly enhance our ability to provide impactful financial health workshops, personalized 1:1 coaching, and robust support for the WMM community, empowering even more women and girls living on low incomes.

Last night, Women’s Money Matters attended The Philanthropy Connection social! It was an inspiring event, connecting us with partners and strengthening our mission to empower women. We're grateful to TPC for their recent funding support. Did you know local Massachusetts giving to nonprofits serving women and girls is only 2.16% of all philanthropic giving (WFBoston Index, 2022)? This statistic underscores our commitment to expanding our impact in collaboration with our partners.

🌟 One of Women's Money Matters' dedicated graduates and passionate advocates was recently featured in the Boston Globe Media! She shared her insights on our upcoming collaborative initiative, the Bridge to Prosperity program, a pilot initiative by Springfield Works, thanks to our funder The Boston Foundation. The Bridge to Prosperity program tackles the "Cliff Effect," where increased income can lead to the loss of public assistance like food, childcare, and housing support, often leaving families worse off despite earning more. This issue discourages families from accepting raises or promotions, impacting their financial stability. The program supports working women and families with cash bridge payments and 1:1 coaching, plus a potential savings bonus for achieving long-term goals. In her story, balancing multiple jobs while striving for a better future for herself and her son, Ariela exemplifies the determination and resilience we aim to support through the Cliffs Program. Together, we're committed to creating pathways to prosperity and financial empowerment for women and girls with low-incomes. 💪 Read more about our Bridge to Prosperity Program here: https://loom.ly/-DZiGlc Read the full Boston Globe article here: https://loom.ly/dJMjq2g #FinancialEmpowerment #CommunitySupport #BostonFoundation #CliffsProgram
