Honoring servicewomen, preserving their stories and inspiring future generations.

About us

The Military Women's Memorial, located at the Ceremonial Entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, is a living memorial. We are dedicated to honoring and remembering the service of our military women, telling their individual stories and collective history to the public, in order to help empower the future generations. Dedicated on Oct. 18, 1997, the Memorial houses an exhibit gallery chronicling the history of women’s service, a theater, Hall of Honor, conference room, gift shop and an outdoor terrace and Court of Valor. The heart of the Memorial is the Register, an interactive database that includes the name, picture, service history and awards of nearly 245,000 past and present servicewomen.

The 2024 PARIS OLYMPIC GAMES OPENING CEREMONY is TODAY! Through our HER STORIES this week, we have seen how our Servicewomen have participated in the Olympics as athletes, security, greeters, and translators. Today, we add TORCHBEARER to this impressive list. AT(AW)1 DALEYA JOHNSON - HER STORY from the MWM National Register "I was selected as Torchbearer, Summer Olympics 1996 in Santa Clara, CA, directly resulting from sharing my Naval service in the form of a 100 word essay. My essay was selected from among tens of thousands of applicants! On May 3, 1996, with my command cheering me on, I passed the flame, the same flame Muhammed Ali used to light the eternal Torch starting the Olympic Competition at Atlanta Georgia! Other: I considered my most memorable and professionally fulfilling accomplishment the fact that I established the office of Department Career Counselor 1994 at Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Support, Naval Air Reserve Santa Clara, CA. I turned a damp, dark and empty office (with the exception of a three-legged, raggedy desk) into a productive operation, overseeing the military and personal careers of over 450 personnel. In fact, I was so visible and accessible, that I was sought for counselling much more and consistently mistaken for the Command Career Counselor." DID YOU KNOW? Servicewomen have participated in the Olympics as world class athletes and in a variety of other roles. CPT McIlvenna was part of the security forces for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, responsible for the safety and security of athletes and guests from around the world. CPT AMY MCILVENNA - HER STORY from the MWM National Register My most memorable moments were my participation in the recovery efforts of American Eagle Flight 4184 that crashed near Roselawn, Indiana, on October 31, 1994. It was a very emotional deployment and yet a blessing at the same time. I have spoken with some of the family members of the victims since the crash. Being able to share my story with them was an experience that words can't do justice to. I was also part of the security for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, GA. It was a great honor to be part of such a wonderful event. I met many people from many countries and took the opportunity to learn about countries I never thought I would visit. My 2009 deployment to Iraq, was an experience that taught me a great deal about acceptance and faith. I deployed with my husband and we learned much more about each other than we could have ever imagined. I was the only female officer in a Cavalry unit. It was a very trying deployment which left me angry and more determined to become a better officer and a better person. I have been so blessed in my military career. I have made and innumerable amount of friends, had opportunities go to many places and do amazing things. If I had the chance to do this all over again, I would!"
