  • A Message from our CEO, Kristin Shrimplin: The Scripps Family Impact Fund awarded Women Helping Women more than $513,000 for our Survivor Equity Fund! Alex Bakkum, Chief Philanthropy Officer for the Scripps family shared: “The family was truly impressed with Women Helping Women because of the caliber of its team members and their effectiveness at addressing critical needs. It’s an honor to support such an outstanding mission.” Women Helping Women believes survivors and believes in investing in the safety of survivors. We are beyond grateful that the Scripps Family Impact Fund shares our vision of safety for survivors. The goal of our work is clear: we want to do what we can as an agency to meet survivors’ safety needs and to do it in a way that is very accessible, rapid, and reduces systemic barriers. The vast majority of survivors that WHW serves live below the 200% federal poverty level and are struggling to make ends meet. They cannot afford relocation. They cannot afford to change their locks. They cannot afford emergency hotel stays. They cannot afford back utilities and rent which is forcing them and their children to face eviction. The truth is, when survivors lack financial means for immediate safety—they are at increased risk for repeat victimization and homicide. There are moments when momentum builds and tipping points begin to emerge. Friends, we are on the precipice of a tipping point --- and it's a tipping point that is driving transformative change for survivors.

  • A message from our CEO, Kristin Shrimplin: “Survivors already bear the inequitable burden of the economic cost of gender-based violence. A female survivor experiences a lifetime personal cost of nearly $105,000. The vast majority of survivors that WHW serves live below the 200% federal poverty level. What does this mean for their safety? They cannot afford relocation. They cannot afford to change their locks. They cannot afford emergency hotel stays. As WHW launches its new 3 Year Strategic Plan in June 2024, the organization’s Survivor Equity Fund is activating a bold commitment to investing $100,000 annually into the region to support survivors with immediate safety needs. The agency is also committing to allocate $100,000 annually of its investment income back into the Survivor Equity Fund so that the balance of the Fund maintains at least $500,000. In the next 24 months, WHW’s goal is to amplify the Survivor Equity Fund to $1.5M and invest at least $300,000 annually to support survivors’ complex needs. In our abundant region, we know we can do better and we must be solution-focused. That’s why WHW is flipping the expected script of a nonprofit and we are now acting as an equitable funder. We believe survivors. We invest in survivors.” To donate to the Survivor Equity Fund: https://buff.ly/4cadxxy
