The Wolf Conservation Center seeks a Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization in its next phase of accelerated growth. The Chief Executive Officer will work in partnership with the Board of Directors to provide strategic vision and leadership for the organization. The Chief Executive Officer will oversee advocacy, research, wolf husbandry, education, fundraising, communication, and administrative functions while developing a strategic and operational plan that furthers the mission and vision of the Wolf Conservation Center. Two of the Wolf Conservation Center's tiniest residents received their first health check today. The duo (both boys) are healthy and strong, two qualities that are crucial if captive-to-wild adult releases resume in the future. Unbeknownst to them, they represent the WCC's active efforts to save their endangered species from extinction. Thank you, kiddos!

Earlier this month, 5 Mexican gray wolf pups flew from the WCC to New Mexico, where they were fostered into a wild wolf den. While we are incredibly excited for these pups to potentially have long wild lives ahead of them, we must acknowledge Trumpet’s unknowing sacrifice. Over the years, 12 of Trumpet's 24 pups have been fostered and only one, Slides, is known to still be alive in the wild. While Trumpet still has two remaining pups to care for, it would be cruel of us to assume that she doesn't feel any loss or sadness. Join us in sending congratulatory howls to the pups in New Mexico, and please send loving howls to Trumpet; without her, we would not have fostered a single pup over the years. Hopefully we’ll one day see adults and family groups released again – methods that would truly improve genetic diversity in the wild and would keep families intact.

Today, the Wolf Conservation Center and Western Watersheds Project had a new billboard installed along Interstate 25 north of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico to promote the existence of a $105,000 reward fund for information about illegal killings of Mexican gray wolves. Since 1998, at least 283 Mexican gray wolves have been killed in Arizona and New Mexico, with 149 of those being illegal. Poaching is the leading cause of mortality but criminal convictions are rare; we hope that financial incentives (contributed by many groups) will encourage those with any information to come forward. The billboard features Mexican gray wolf Rosa - her brother was killed by poachers and six of her grandchildren disappeared after being released to the wild. They all deserve justice.

Congress is currently considering the House FY 2024 Interior appropriations bill, H.R. 4821, which unfortunately includes harmful riders that threaten to weaken the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Most notably, Sec. 452 of this bill would remove protections for gray wolves in 44 states by reinstating the flawed rule that delisted them. The gray wolf, an integral part of our ecosystem, was almost driven to extinction due to decades of aggressive control programs and habitat loss. Thanks to the ESA, they have started to make a comeback since 1974, but their recovery journey is far from complete.
