Since our founding in 1938, Western National Parks Association has published award-winning books as a nonprofit publishing partner of the National Park Service. While we’ve greatly expanded our services for our partner parks, we still independently publish books—as well as trail guides and Junior Ranger booklets—to make the national park experience even more spectacular. Our thoroughly researched, well-written, and beautifully designed books represent the unique diversity of our partner parks. We also issue cookbooks, children’s books, travel guides, and reference titles. Every book sale supports the 70 national parks that we partner with. Happy Independence Day! What better way to spend the day than at a national park? Today, national parks bring us joy and reflection, helping us honor the many people who had to fight for their freedom even after independence was won. They tell diverse stories of struggle and strength, giving us breathtaking places to honor the past and look toward the future. They preserve history and bring much-needed joy into our lives. National parks are places to play, to connect, and to just breathe. Remember, when you're out there, enjoy yourself and recreate responsibly so that we can continue to enjoy these magnificent lands for generations to come. In the 1990s, the Channel Islands fox faced near extinction and was revived through a monumental and collaborative effort. More recently, WNPA donors funded continuing research to protect and conserve the habitats of both the island fox and spotted skunk, two species that live only at Channel Islands National Park. With support from people like you, we can continue protecting wildlife in our national parks. You can learn more and donate at wnpa.org/donate to make an impact! Today we celebrate and honor Juneteenth, officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day. On this day in 1865—two years after slavery had been abolished—the news of freedom finally reached more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas. So many of our amazing National Park Service partner parks preserve African American heritage and support the continued pursuit of liberty—thank you to everyone working in the parks today to help honor and share these important stories of struggle and triumph. In honor of Juneteenth, today is a fee-free day in all US national parks. #juneteenth #nationalparkservice #nationalparks Image: Juneteenth Emancipation Celebration Day in Texas, 1900 Mrs. Charles Stephenson (Grace Murray)/The Portal to Texas History Austin History Center, Austin Public Library
