Updates

  • As part of their ongoing commitment to work zone safety, the Wisconsin County Highway Association (WCHA) joined partners in Madison this week to present the latest Work Zone Safe “Move Over Safe” scholarship. Earlier this year, WCHA joined a coalition of the Wisconsin Transportation Builders Association (WTBA), the Wisconsin Counties Association (WCA), LIUNA Wisconsin LECET, and the Operating Engineers Local 139, to bring the Work Zone Safe Curriculum to Wisconsin, designed to teach new drivers about safe driving in work zones. The newest $500 scholarship winner, Dakoda Funk, from Milton, was presented with his scholarship this week in Madison. Dakoda accepted the scholarship on July 15, at a meeting of the CESA-2 driver’s education annual staff meeting. "WCHA congratulates Dakoda (Funk) as a monthly winner of the Work Zone Safe Move Over Safe Scholarship," said Patrick Vander Sanden, Executive Director of the Wisconsin County Highway Association (WCHA). "We are honored to be the lead sponsor of the scholarship program and are proud to stand alongside WTSB and our local transportation partners who have brought Work Zone Safe to our young motorists. The more people aware of how to safely navigate the orange and yellow colors of the cones, safety vest and critical signage, the better chance to maintain a safe environment for our road crews, who need to stay focused. Hopefully other students will be wise and follow Dakoda’s lead and take the course." The $500 scholarship is managed through the course vendor, Work Zone Safe, which provides the online course to students in Wisconsin. Every teen driver who successfully completes the Wisconsin Work Zone Safe online course can choose to be entered into a drawing for the scholarship, awarded monthly. WCHA is a partner in the effort to bring the course curriculum and is the lead sponsor of the scholarship program in Wisconsin. WTBA Executive Director Steve Baas added to the presentation, “I want congratulate Dakoda and thank him and the hundreds of other students taking this course and equipping themselves to be smarter, safer drivers. Their investment of time and study will pay dividends in lives saved in our work zones.” Pictured: Tom Robins - Founder, Work Zone Safe; Patrick Vander Sanden -Executive Director, WCHA; Dakoda Funk - Work Zone Safe June 2024 Scholarship Winner; Steve Steinke - Dakoda's Driver's Ed Instructor; and Steve Baas - Executive Director, Wisconsin Transportation Builders Association.

  • Work Zone Safety is a cause that is front and center, and the message is clear - avoid distractions, stay focused, and heed the messages while driving through work zones. Katie Schroeder, Patrol Worker from the Waukesha County Department of Public Works, perfectly conveyed that message at the WisDOT SE Work Zone Safety Awareness event this week. WCHA will always be focused on keeping all construction crews safe while doing the important work of improving Wisconsin's transportation system.

  • Proud to stand alongside WTBA on this very important cause - stay focused and be careful while driving through work zones!

Three news conferences in three cities over three days – all with one unified message: we can and we WILL do something to make work zones safer. Last week, WTBA and its coalition of supporters and sponsors launched Work Zone Safe Wisconsin, a free online course that walks you through the keys to driving through work zones safely. The course takes less than an hour to complete and helps young drivers meet the new state law requiring at least 30 minutes of work zone education to get their license. It’s a program near and dear to all of our members’ hearts and one we know will save lives. Please take two minutes to watch our recap video and, more importantly, head to workzonesafe.com and take the course. Anyone, any age, anywhere can take it. It takes all of us to make the change.

  • It's been a great week to support Work Zone Safe with the Wisconsin Transportation Builders Association. WCHA is proud to partner and be a lead sponsor of the scholarship opportunity with Wisconsin high school driver's-to-be. "A 15/16-year-old is inundated with messages coming from hundreds of directions. As they prepare to become drivers, they hopefully know the importance of putting on their seat belts, putting down their phones, and focusing on the road. These concepts being engrained into their mindset, we need to ensure that they are prepared also with the knowledge to safely deal with the orange and yellow colors of the cones, safety vests and critical signage as they approach a work zone," remarked WCHA Executive Director Patrick Vander Sanden at each of the press tour events in Lodi, Eau Claire and Green Bay. Work Zone Safe is a renowned driver's ed curriculum that will be an option for driver's education students and has been brought to Wisconsin through a partnership with WTBA and others.

One of the best parts of the Work Zone Safe Wisconsin (WZSW) program is its flexibility: anyONE can take it anyWHERE at any TIME. Heck, even Hoffman Construction Company CEO Jim Hoffman plans to take it. “Here’s to the new education system. I’m going to log on and see if I can even pass the test,” Hoffman said with a smile today. Hoffman was one of several speakers to touch on the new online platform’s importance, joining WTBA to announce its launch to western-Wisconsin media in Osseo this morning.  He considers the drivers education platform a tool in the overall safety toolbox, and a useful one at that. “Certain things are in your control, certain things you can do: you can put your phone down, you can respect the speed.  But when you’re a construction worker, there’s certain things that are out of your control.  What’s out of your control is what happens on the other side of those barrels,” Hoffman said. WZSW (workzonesafe.com) aims to teach drivers about both sides of those barrels, explaining the latest laws, guidelines, and sharing personal stories of the men and women working in bright orange and yellow.  It features 14 videos and a number of articles and obituaries about real people impacted by careless driving. Simply getting to the press conference Wednesday demonstrated that point: You had to pass through a Hoffman work zone on I-94, reducing your speed to 60 MPH.  There were plenty of drivers who clearly didn’t pay attention. “This happens every day in Wisconsin,” Eau Claire County Highway Commissioner Jon Johnson said.  “We’re very happy for the education to get to the root cause of some of the teen driving challenges we’re seeing.  That’s a great leap forward.” It’ll take many strides to make true progress after nine people were killed and more than 700 injured in work zone crashes in Wisconsin last year.  “That’s too many.  That’s got to stop,” WTBA Exec. Director Steve Baas said.  “We wouldn’t accept that in any other profession, we shouldn’t accept it for the contractors like the ones you see here today.  Keep your eyes up, keep your phones down, buckle up and slow down and let’s bring everyone home safe from their work zones every day.” Huge thanks to our speakers and supporters today, including Becki Slater, MEP, CEM, MCP, Wisconsin County Highway Association (WCHA) Exec. Director Patrick Vander Sanden (WCHA is providing $500 monthly scholarships through the program), Mathy Construction Company, and Monarch Paving Company. We have one more event this week in Green Bay. #WorkZoneSafety #EverybodysBusiness #DriversEducation
