In Papua New Guinea, we’re part of a new expedition to study a unique ocean environment. "WCS has been proud to support the collective efforts of local communities and the government in New Ireland Province to manage coastal waters critical for threatened biodiversity and local food security and livelihoods," says WCS's Stacy Jupiter. Scientists on this trip will use cutting-edge technology to assess the water’s health and support the country’s ongoing conservation efforts. More: https://bit.ly/4d3ANh2 #TheGlobalExpedition

Over 90% of the #shark fin trade is now regulated on CITES. Implementation is the next step. New ID guides, launched by WCS's Luke Warwick and team today at a meeting in Geneva and free to download online, will help customs and enforcement agencies do this effectively. https://bit.ly/3LtQhzf

This is the first known video of the Amazon weasel, a rare small carnivore. It was filmed by a group of coffee producers in Bolivia, where the species hadn't been recorded before. It's an example of the importance of citizen science to biodiversity knowledge, says WCS's Robert Wallace. Bolivia is a recognized world leader in this area. More: https://lnkd.in/eRNrqSRz

It can be difficult to differentiate the many crediting systems in the #naturefinance space. Our new report, “HIFOR Units and the Biodiversity Credits Market,” explores how HIFOR units and #biodiversity credits are different, similar, and how they can be used in combination with one another. Discover the Maya Forest Corridor (MFC) in central Belize—a diverse tapestry of habitats including secondary forests, protected areas, farms, and more. Spanning 373 km², it links the Selva Maya, one of Mesoamerica's largest unbroken habitats across Belize, #Mexico, and #Guatemala. This crucial corridor connects northern Belize's forests to the Maya Mountain Massif in the south. Home to a rich array of biodiversity—from jaguars to migratory birds, Baird’s tapirs to Morelet’s crocodiles—the MFC's forests, savannahs, and waterways sustain countless species. Preserving this area is vital for ecological balance and resilience against climate change. Our coalition partners focus on conservation efforts, ensuring this lifeline for wildlife thrives for future generations in the Mesoamerican region. Visit our website at belize.wcs.org to find out more about ours and our partners' work to protect the MFC. #WeStandForWildlife and Wildplaces #MayaForestCorridor #Forests #SelvaMaya #Preservation #Resileince #Belize

Incredible new footage of Cross River #gorillas — the world’s rarest. There are only about 300 left found along the Nigeria-Cameroon border. So inspiring to see this many and the 4 females all have infants on their backs! This success is a credit to the collaboration with 9 communities in the Mbe Mountain area.
