One of my favorite priorities to work on is wildlife crossings🐾, which help animals move safely across our lands and protect motorists. In an era of thorny environmental challenges, animal deaths from our roads is a fixable problem.💯 Wildlife crossings are a win-win solution🤝that help people & nature thrive together. This morning, I helped launch California Wildlife Reconnected🐾, a landmark public-private partnership to build more wildlife crossings. The incredible Beth Pratt and the National Wildlife Federation have brought together philanthropy & government to get more crossings built, more quickly. Which is critical to protect our renowned biodiversity in decades to come. This effort was inspired💡 by the largest wildlife crossing in the world that Caltrans is currently building outside of LA, thanks to the Annenberg Foundation, the Wildlife Conservation Board, and so many others. A big THANK YOU to the Wildlife Conservation Board for funding $600,000 to Coastal Corridor Alliance in partnership with the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority for the Randall Preserve Resource Management Plan, Coastal Resilience Strategy, and Public Access Plan!

The Wildlife Conservation Board awarded $2.45 million to support construction of the habitat elements of the Restoration and Public Access project at the former Roddy Ranch Golf Course. Both the East CCC Habitat Conservancy and the East Bay Regional Park District are enthusiastic about the continued progress and funding for the construction. Thank to the Wildlife Conservation Board for supporting all phases of this important work— from acquisition, through planning, and construction. Inspiring first week at the Wildlife Conservation Board! Traveled with my team to Carmel Valley to celebrate the permanent protection of Rana Creek Ranch. This incredible 14,000 acres of rich biodiversity and cultural heritage will be co-stewarded by The Wildlands Conservancy and Esselin Tribe of Monterey County. I can’t believe this is my job!!

Local news crews joined cbec and the rest of project team this past Wednesday to mark a major milestone at the site of the Hallwood Side Channel and Floodplain Restoration Project. Twelve years in the making, this multi-benefit project was championed at cbec by Director Chris Hammersmark and Ecohydrologist April Sawyer, who led the project team through all elements of the project. The goals of the project were to help this 2-mile reach of the Yuba River become a more natural and fishier place with a thriving self-sustaining river ecosystem that supports a wide range of native plant and animal species—of course including Chinook salmon and steelhead. In order to achieve this, we transformed the river by removing the unnatural constraints on its natural dynamism; allowing the floodplain to inundate during wet periods to foster rearing habitat for juvenile salmon, and adjust the location of its channels to provide an ever-evolving mosaic of aquatic and terrestrial habitat types. As we celebrate #CABiodiversity, WCB Senior Environmental Scientist Aaron Haiman would like to tell you about Arundo and why we are trying to get rid of it. Arundo is one of the most invasive plants in California. We have funded several projects that specifically target #Arundo control or eradication in the state, including the Putah-Cache Watershed in Yolo County, Salinas River in Monterey County, Santa Clara River in Ventura County, Carpinteria Creek in Santa Barbara County, San Luis Rey Watershed in San Diego County, and coastal watersheds in Orange and San Diego Counties. We'd like to celebrate these projects along with our partners throughout the state this week!
