Exciting news! WildAid's new survey reveals that shark fin consumption in Thailand has dropped 34% over the past 6 years—equivalent to 8.1 million fewer servings annually. This decline is thanks in part to growing awareness among Thais of the importance of sharks to ocean health and that shark fin consumption is pushing these vital animals towards extinction. While the survey findings are encouraging, there is still work to be done to protect sharks and maintain healthy oceans. Elephants are key players in the fight against climate change. As they forage for food, they eat or crush small plants and trees. This allows larger, slow-growing trees get the sunlight needed to grow, prosper, and capture carbon. Studies show that just one elephant can increase the carbon capture of a rainforest by around 9,500 tons per square kilometer. We all have a role to play in the fight against climate change, which is quickly becoming the number one threat to elephants and other wildlife species across the globe. While governments and corporations must do their part to reduce emissions, individual climate actions can make a difference. In fact, by 2050, 40 to 70% of all carbon emissions can be eliminated through demand-side actions. WildAid works to encourage low-carbon lifestyles in the world’s two highest emitting countries—the U.S. and China—inspiring millions to make individual lifestyle choices that collectively can significantly prevent waste and reduce emissions. In case you missed it: WildAid recently unveiled the “Albacore,” a new patrol boat, to help Gabon combat destructive illegal fishing. Gabon boasts some of the richest and most diverse marine ecosystems on the planet, including the world's largest nesting population of leatherback sea turtles, humpback dolphins, over 50 species of sharks and rays, and vital mangrove forests that support both marine life and coastal communities. WildAid and our partner Choice have launched the "Good-for-Nothing Bushmeat" campaign in Vietnam, which is considered a hub for bushmeat consumption, urging Vietnamese citizens to say no to wildlife products. This initiative challenges outdated beliefs about bushmeat being “hygienic, organic, and gourmet,” highlighting its serious health risks and environmental impact. Jaws ignited a powerful fascination with sharks. The bestseller helped shift the conversation around these misunderstood creatures from fear to a greater awareness of the real threat: global overfishing and shark finning, which claim over 100 million sharks annually. Today, sharks are seen as majestic guardians of our oceans, crucial for maintaining marine health. Last week, in a significant milestone for marine conservation, WildAid unveiled a new patrol boat, named “Albacore,” during a ceremony in Libreville, Gabon. The vessel was presented to Gabon’s General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture, marking a new chapter in the battle against destructive illegal fishing in Gabon’s waters.
