Enthusiasm was evident as DHCD Secretary Jake Day announced the increase in Rental Housing funds available from $55mm in 2023 to $110mm in 2024 thanks to Governor Moore's leadership to prioritize housing in Maryland. https://lnkd.in/eu6uwWnM
DHCD Secretary Jake Day and staff attended the Maryland Affordable Housing Coalition’s annual Secretary’s Breakfast to announce this year’s Housing Awards and promote the ongoing partnership between DHCD and the Coalition. Additionally, Secretary Day highlighted Governor Wes Moore’s 2024 Housing Package, which is a part of the Moore-Miller Administration’s effort to make Maryland more affordable. We celebrated the ribbon cutting at Seneca Creek Senior today, along with our clients Benjamin C. Miller at Wellington Development and Stephen P. Wilson at SCG DEVELOPMENT and Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. This beautifully appointed new community in Gaithersburg, MD is comprised of 111 one and two bedroom units that will serve seniors aged 62 and over, earning between 30% and 70% of AMI. Special congratulations to our Project Manger, Temitayo Fasusi, RA, for overseeing the project through construction and working alongside James G. Davis Construction (DAVIS) to make this a terrific new home for residents in Montgomery County.

Project Manger, Carl Skooglund, AIA, CDT, will be presenting an overview of the award winning 801 E. Men's Shelter on the historic St. Elizabeths Campus in Washington, DC at the USGBC Building Transformation Forum. This flagship, LEED Gold certified shelter opened in January 2022 and is the first in Washington DC designed to accommodate a variety of discrete support programs, including a daytime service center, dormitories (365 beds total) dedicated to overnight “low-barrier” stays, working individuals, seniors & the medically frail, those needing respite care, and a health clinic. The accessory amenities include a multi-purpose space, dining room, laundry, showers, social service consultations, computer lab, salon, and donated clothing boutique.

Cheers to our development partners and all of those working hard to support efforts to develop housing in our region. Together we can make a difference in the communities we serve.
Spent the day in Annapolis with the MARYLAND AFFORDABLE HOUSING COALITION INC talking with Maryland State Senators and Delegates to remind them of the importance of supporting the Governor's proposed budget which includes $110MM in Rental Housing Works funding. These funds are desperately needed if we are going to make a dent in the housing crisis. Maryland needs over 90,000 units of attainable housing but spends less than 0.2% of its budget to fund it compared to DC that spends 0.5% of its budget. We were grateful that Senator Mike Jackson (Prince George's, Charles and Calvert County) was able to meet with a group of us and express his ongoing support! Congratulations to Temitayo Fasusi, RA for being selected to the Christopher Kelly Leadership Development program. According to said Michael Wiencek, FAIA "Temi’s dedication to enhancing the quality of the projects she touches, mentoring other staff, and her care for the improvement of the entire profession have made her a standout Project Manager in the firm. As a rising star in the profession, Temi’s project management abilities will be further enhanced, multiplying her abilities to become an even stronger leader." We are eager to watch her grow in this year-long program as she focuses on core professional skills such as entrepreneurship and firm management, working together and collaboration, the art of negotiation, client development, community leadership, industry trends, and more.

For more than 10 years, our firm has invested in aspiring "architects" by volunteering in Washington Architecture Foundation's "Architects in the Schools" program. This year, several of our team members partnered with Noyes Elementary School and Ms. Envangelista’s Third Grade class to create a curriculum and final project that allowed the students to design their own city. We introduced students to various architectural and design aspects, including building blocks of structures, plans, sections, and elevations. Several classes were dedicated to visualization and conceptualization to turn theory into reality. Such a fun and fulfilling time that we hope will inspire these young minds to become architects of the future.
