Cybersecurity may not be the career for you! Yep, I said it. 1) The chances of you earning six figures in your first job with no previous relevant experience is pretty much zero. Anyone saying anything other than this is looking to sell you something. Take a job based on the career opportunity, not the starting salary. 2) There are very few actual entry-level roles. Expect your first opportunity through a job that touches security but is not a dedicated security role. Get in and move internally. 3) Competition for true entry-level jobs is fierce. Some people have worked hard to create a relevant hands-on experience, and some have spent time networking and studying. If you haven’t done this, too, it will be hard to stand out. 4) You’re not going to get an entry-level remote job. You may as well buy a lottery ticket if this is what you're looking for. If you see one, I can guarantee that there are people with solid commercial experience applying, and you won’t get a sniff. Be flexible and open to relocating to get your first opportunity. Now, the flip side of this is that once you get into the industry, your compensation can hockey stick. Certain security areas are still in high demand, and the salaries reflect that. In these areas, you can expect job opportunities to come to you. ……. it isn’t easy, but it is worth it.
