About us
The Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) is responsible for ensuring the safe and competent practice of licensed professionals in Wisconsin. The department also administers and enforces laws to assure safe and sanitary conditions in public and private buildings. It provides administrative services to the state occupational regulatory authorities responsible for regulation of occupations and offers policy assistance in such areas as evaluating and establishing new professional licensing programs, creating routine procedures for legal proceedings, and adjusting policies in response to public needs. DSPS licenses and regulates more than 200 different types of credentials. The agency also provides centralized administrative services to nearly 100 boards, councils, and advisory committees. The boards, councils, and advisory committees have varying levels of responsibility and professional oversight based on statutory provisions. The Department is organized into five divisions and the Office of the Secretary. The divisions are Industry Services, Legal Services and Compliance, Management Services, Policy Development, and Professional Credential Processing.

It was a beautiful day Wednesday for DSPS Secretary Dan Hereth to present a $25,000 check to Northcentral Technical College at their Public Safety Center of Excellence campus. The college is one of four recipients in the latest round of DSPS Youth Firefighter Training grants - https://bit.ly/3xJKMZN Thanks to the college and President Jeannie Worden for hosting and providing a tour of the Public Safety Center. This is the type of announcement where only a big check presentation will do! FVTC has received a $15K grant from the Wisconsin Department of Safety & Professional Services to help train high school students interested in volunteering or starting a career in fire protection. Seven area high schools and fire departments are already lined up to participate. Training will take place at the college's Public Safety Training Center, where students will learn fire behavior and fire control techniques. The college is partnering with several fire departments to teach a Firefighting Principals course for area high schools as a way to encourage interest in volunteer or professional #fire service. Secretary Dan Hereth and Wisconsin Department of Administration Secretary Kathy Blumenfeld joined UW Eau Claire Chancellor Jim Schmidt at a groundbreaking for the university's planned Science and Health Sciences building. Congrats to the Universities of Wisconsin on this $340 million investment in the future of our state and its workforce.

It wasn't the best day for solar, but clouds couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of Chippewa Valley Technical College staff, including Dean Adam Wehling, who showed DSPS Secretary Dan Hereth around the college's Energy Education Center, partially powered by these solar panels. He also toured the CVTC Health Education Center and learned how the college is strengthen the state workforce through #innovation and #apprenticeship.
