We spoke with Ned Daly for SeafoodSource on the importance of #datastandards for businesses to tackle challenges like FSMA and EUDR compliance, vendor-lock, and to more easily adapt to ever-shifting industry requirements (and reduce the inefficiencies associated with divergent lotting systems, data clean-up and more). A big focus is on businesses adopting #traceability systems that align with Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability (GDST) standards in order to move swiftly toward fully traceable #seafood supply chains. Cattle farming is one of the biggest drivers of deforestation in the world. Brazil, one of the largest exporters of beef and among the leading countries in commodity-driven deforestation, has a crucial role to play in the fight against deforestation. Over the past two years, Wholechain has worked closely with IDH, Rever Consulting | Consultoria em Sustentabilidade and cattle farmers to understand the industry’s challenges and role of traceability in ensuring deforestation-free sources. We’re pleased to present the “Framework for the Interoperable Electronic Traceability of Cattle.” Co-authored with Rever and IDH, the Framework provides a roadmap for standardized, interoperable data across the cattle supply chain. Based on GS1’s EPCIS standard and informed by the work of industry-specific initiatives such as Beef on Track, Sustainable Calf Production Protocol, Roundtable on Sustainable Beef, the Accountability Framework Initiative (AFI) which describe important sustainability practices, the Framework, similar to the Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability (GDST), complements these efforts by establishing a data standard for defining and documenting traceability that can be shared across systems. Access the Framework and read more about its purpose at our blog: https://lnkd.in/e4CaQuQs Check out the GS1 US case study at: https://lnkd.in/eC8YFqUD

About 50% of agricultural products exported from Brazil to the European Union are linked to deforestation and forest degradation—particularly soy and beef. We're working with Rever Consulting | Consultoria em Sustentabilidade to help achieve deforestation-free cattle supply chains in Brazil using GS1 US standards. Read the complete case study at the link below. Special thanks to Bill Phoenix and Vivian Tai for your partnership in advancing the use of GS1 standards to simplify traceability in complex supply chains. https://lnkd.in/e7JD5BNX

The Fish Site spoke with our co-founder Mark K. on how Wholechain grew from a need for true end-to-end traceability in fragmented #seafood supply chains. Read the article at: https://lnkd.in/eNSSTuaY
Traceability systems like Wholechain can address seafood fraud and forced labor, improving the seafood sector’s reputation. 🦐🔍 Wholechain, inspired by small-scale fisheries in Indonesia, uses blockchain technology to ensure full traceability, enhancing food safety and reducing environmental impact. 🌏🔗 Kaplan highlights that compliance with food safety regulations leads to better monitoring of food waste and redirects near-expiry food to food-insecure communities. 🍽️♻️ The system has caught fraudulent companies by identifying anomalies in documentation and vessel flags. 🚨🛳️ Kaplan’s experience in mobile tech and small-scale fisheries led to the creation of Wholechain, improving transparency and efficiency in the seafood supply chain. 📱🌊 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eNSSTuaY #wholechain #blockchain #fisheries #traceability #foodsafety #foodwaste

"According to Kaplan, it’s [food safety] that’s been prioritised by Western authorities like the FDA of the United States, whose updates to rule 204 of Food Safety Modernization Act will require full traceability of all seafood to the boat or farm. Wholechain has focused on simplifying compliance with the rule through its alignment with GS1 US and the Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability (GDST) data standards, and Kaplan emphasises that ensuring food safety will have a range of knock-on benefits." Thank you The Fish Site / The Fish Site Media for the highlight featuring Wholechain's co-founder Mark K.! Read the full article below: https://lnkd.in/eNSSTuaY #foodsafety #gdst #seafoodtraceability

Great blog post from Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability (GDST) discussing the basics of interoperability and the importance of "making all data types and forms universally accessible." Interoperability allows buyers and suppliers to choose the system that works best for their needs and share data with each other seamlessly. Some of you may remember a world where you couldn't text someone that didn't use the same mobile network as you... that's where we were before interoperability.
We’re raising awareness of #interoperability. It’s a term you might not have heard before, but plays an indispensable role in unlocking truly traceable seafood. Why is this important? Because knowing where our seafood comes from means we know whether or not it’s been caught in ways that are kind to our ocean.
