We love our talented team of volunteers at Wevise and are committed to recognizing the efforts of some of our best and brightest. Our new Volunteer of the Month award looks to highlight the hard work and dedication necessary to make a difference and push Wevise’s mission forward. Balancing family matters, career goals, and volunteer work is not easy to pull off, but some handle it with true aplomb – and that’s why our first Volunteer of the Month is the one and only Josie W. Mentors on our platform (and beyond!): check out this great resource for helping your mentees make progress towards their dream careers!
Let's talk about dream jobs. 🔮 As a manager, I’ve often heard people talk about a dream job or goal but then immediately dismiss this as unattainable. Many people also feel lost about where they should be going next but don't know how to find out. Sometimes that person is me, too. Yep, we’ve all been there. I’ve found that it can really help to have some structure and someone to talk to. Most of the time, we already know what we want or need to do, deep down, but need someone to pull it out of us. I came across a framework I absolutely love for helping people plan out their development paths. It originally came from Kim Scott’s Radical Candor, and I’ve tweaked it over the years with my own teams. I like to call it (somewhat unimaginatively), ✨ the dream jobs convos ✨ . It’s a set of 3, one-hour long sessions you can do with someone to help them illuminate their values, their goals, and a plan for getting to where they want to be. Here are the 3 sessions: Session 1: Values “Starting with kindergarten, tell me about your life.” Let your counterpart talk. You’re there to listen and help them understand some of the choices they made according to their values. Look particularly at transition points - between jobs, between countries, etc. What did they feel was important as they narrate their story? For example, maybe money was a constant issue growing up, so financial stability is important to them versus working in a risky but rewarding environment. At the end, talk to them about what values you heard based on their story, and let them agree, disagree, or add more. Session 2: Dream jobs “Tell me about 5 dream jobs.” These can range from the more expected progressions (like getting promoted to the next level) to the really dream-dream jobs that they hold deep inside. After you've written the jobs down, work with the person to list out the skills you'd need to have in order to do those jobs. Rate each of the needed skills in terms of how good the person feels they currently are at the skills (I do a 1-5 scale - ex. below). Session 3: Planning Identify the common skills that need some work and that are also applicable to the person's current job. Lay out a 6, 12, 18 month plan with them to strengthen the skills with specific actions to take, e.g. coursework, working on a project that will allow them to develop the skill, etc. Make sure you return to the values throughout and that the path they are going on is aligned with what’s important to them. I’ve seen some incredible results from having these conversations and following up on the plan every 6 months. One person made both professional and personal plans and absolutely smashed them, finishing a career change program and writing and publishing a book at the same time. Simply being able to see that there are realistic, tangible steps toward something that felt unattainable was a game changer for a lot of people. I hope this now helps someone find their path!

Despite the strides we've made in gender equality in the tech industry, challenges in overall well-being persist. According to a recent article from DataCenter Knowledge, nearly a fifth of female tech employees are considering leaving their roles within the year. The article lists several ways that tech companies can foster more inclusion in their workplace, such as using inclusive language in job descriptions, addressing unconscious stereotypes through bias training, setting clear consequences for workplace misconduct, providing flexible work arrangements, and fostering professional development for all employees through training and mentorship programs. Prioritizing mentorship programs is particularly important for women in tech because the tech industry is still male-dominated. According to the article, women comprise only 26% of the tech workforce. This lack of representation can make it difficult for women to find role models and mentors. At Wevise, we're passionate about fostering a more gender-balanced workplace in tech. That's why we're thrilled to spotlight our free on-demand mentorship platform! Wevise allows individuals to request mentorship based on specific needs, interests, backgrounds, and experiences. This means mentees can be matched with mentors who have overcome the same barriers they may be facing, including gender inequality. I help Product Managers break into AI Leadership - no coding required! Ex-Alexa AI Principal Product Manager | Launched 1st GenAI Answers on Alexa | Top 100 Women of the Future Winner | Reforge Instructor | Speaker
This blows my mind 🤯: *Over 3,700 people have registered for the panel discussion I'm hosting tomorrow for Reforge's ref:AI*. The topic? Answering a (supposedly) simple question: What does an AI PM do? I'm so excited to be joined by Ailian Gan (AI Product Lead at Zoom), Dylan Sellberg (Director of Product, Hubspot AI) and Kumaresh Pattabiraman (Senior Director of Product for GenAI at Linkedin). We’ll talk about how our role and responsibilities have evolved working on cutting edge tech, how we navigate challenges and core competencies that make AI product management distinct, and where we think this role is headed in the future. Join us too? (Link in comments!)
