With summer in the rearview mirror, our days are starting to get a bit shorter, and the night sky shows a bit earlier. So why not make this week’s #PhotogenicFriday 📷 a nighttime experience? In 2019, Michael Fransen, an IT specialist based in WAPA’s Upper Great Plains region, positioned himself just right to capture this photo of WAPA’s Fort Peck-to-Dawson 230-kilovolt line as the moon began to rise over the horizon. Mike’s photo, and his patience for capturing the exposure of the night sky, truly showcases one of Montana’s nicknames: “Big Sky Country.” #PhotogenicFridays #Electric #Infrastructure #Hydropower #CleanEnergy

WAPA Administrator and CEO Tracey A. LeBeau recently met with Pattern Energy Group – a wind, solar, transmission and energy storage developer – to discuss the future of the power grid out West and how independent transmission development plays a role in that future. During the two-day visit, the group toured a high-voltage direct current converter station (shown here) and wind farm construction project in New Mexico. The tour highlighted Pattern Energy’s planned 3.5-gigawatt wind farm in the Estancia Valley and SunZia, a 550-mile direct current transmission line, being constructed to deliver power to Arizona and California. #transmission #CleanEnergy #WindEnergy #ElectricPower #infrastructure

Check it out! This new WAPA video highlights the work that crews from our Rocky Mountain region completed in late August 2024, upgrading the Flatiron-Valley 115-kilovolt transmission line. The line is located south of Highway 34 in Loveland, Colorado, and runs east to west into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Crews raised the height of about 25 H-frame structures to provide more reliable service to the community. #transmission #CleanEnergy #ElectricPower #infrastructure

You feel it? The cooler temperatures? That slight breeze with a chill in it? Fall 🍁 is on the way, and even more so for #PhotogenicFriday 📷 In 2019, Joel Larson, an Electronic Integrated Systems Mechanic for WAPA’s Sierra Nevada region, captured this fall sunset of WAPA’s Cottonwood-Roseville 230-kilovolt line outside of Wheatland #California. The area’s farmland and rice fields, coupled with the evening’s sunset, made for a spectacular view. #PhotogenicFridays #Electric #Infrastructure #Hydropower #CleanEnergy

After multiple tornadoes ripped through northern #SouthDakota the evening of Aug. 28, a one-mile portion of the Western Area Power Administration’s 230-kilovolt line in the area was either destroyed or severely damaged. As the clouds went east, crews from WAPA’s Upper Great Plains sprang into action, erected new #transmission poles to ensure the power continued to flow -- keeping the lights on. Read more about the work these crews did, responding to the severe weather system. #Electric #Infrastructure #Hydropower #CleanEnergy

This week’s #PhotogenicFriday 📸 takes us to the rolling hills of western #SouthDakota and how numerous challenges can face Western Area Power Administration crews in the far rural expanses of our Upper Great Plains footprint. Yesterday, crews responded to a downed conductor along WAPA’s 115-kilovolt Maurine-Sulphur #transmission line located just about 75 miles northeast of Mount Rushmore. A splice resulted in a single phase of the transmission line falling to the ground, resulting in a small brush fire. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the fire was quickly contained. Crews immediately performed the necessary repairs, and the line was back in full operation that evening. WAPA’s linemen, electricians, technicians, and many more responders constantly stand ready to respond to any incidents in an effort to swiftly and safely keep the lights on! #PhotogenicFridays #Electric #Infrastructure #Hydropower #CleanEnergy
