  • The rebuilding of the Francis Scott Key Bridge is a significant infrastructure project that requires precision, planning, and expert guidance. One key player in ensuring this project’s success is the land surveyor. While many people think of bridges in terms of engineering and construction, surveyors' work behind the scenes lays the foundation for a safe and long-lasting structure. So, how do land surveyors contribute to a bridge rebuild? Let’s take a closer look: 1. Initial Site Assessment Before construction begins, surveyors are responsible for evaluating the land where the new bridge will stand. This involves examining the topography (the physical layout of the land), identifying water features, soil stability, and any potential hazards like erosion or shifting ground. These assessments help engineers design a bridge that will be structurally sound and safely located. 2. Precision Mapping and Layout Surveyors use advanced tools like GPS, drones, and laser scanners to create highly accurate maps of the area. These maps provide detailed information about the land, surrounding structures, and roads. This data ensures the bridge's design fits perfectly into its environment, helping construction teams precisely follow the plan. If the bridge’s alignment or elevation is slightly off, it can lead to significant issues. 3. Boundary and Legal Verification One of the most critical tasks for land surveyors is verifying boundaries and easements. When rebuilding a large structure like the Francis Scott Key Bridge, it is essential to ensure that the bridge and its access roads do not infringe on private property or violate local, state, or federal regulations. Surveyors will ensure all construction stays within legal boundaries, preventing costly legal disputes or delays. 4. Construction Monitoring Surveyors don’t stop working once construction begins. Throughout the building process, they conduct regular surveys to ensure the construction stays aligned with the original design. Suppose there are any structural shifts or unexpected changes in the land. In that case, surveyors can detect them early, allowing builders to make necessary adjustments before the problem becomes too severe. 5. Final Inspections and Safety Assurance Once the bridge is complete, surveyors will perform final inspections to ensure the structure is built to specifications. This includes checking the bridge's height, alignment, and overall stability. Their approval is necessary before the bridge can open to the public, guaranteeing the structure meets all safety standards. Land surveyors are crucial to the success of the Francis Scott Key Bridge rebuild. In every project phase, land surveyors help lay the groundwork for a bridge that will serve the community for decades. #landsurveyors #building #bridge #getkidsintosurvey #gkiswest

  • Monuments are critical in land surveying as physical markers that define property boundaries and legal land descriptions. Monuments serve a variety of different purposes, but to name just a few: 1. Monuments as Permanent Reference Points: Monuments serve as enduring and unchanging points on the ground, aiding surveyors in locating property lines and corners. These markers ensure that land boundaries can be accurately re-established over time, even if maps or records are lost or damaged. 2. Monuments as Legal Evidence: Monuments are often the most reliable evidence of property boundaries in legal disputes over land ownership. Courts typically prioritize physical monuments over other types of evidence, such as written descriptions or maps, because they are tangible and visible, providing concrete evidence. 3. Boundary Identification: Monuments help identify the exact locations of property boundaries. They can prevent encroachments or disputes by clearly marking where one property ends and another begins. 4. Survey Data Continuity: Monuments help maintain consistency between old and new surveys. When existing monuments are used, they provide continuity in land records, reducing potential errors or discrepancies in boundary lines. 5. Historical Significance: Some monuments are important, marking original boundaries established decades or centuries ago. These monuments serve as tangible evidence of past land ownership and development patterns and contribute to preserving our land's historical integrity. #gkiswest #getkidsintosurvey #monuments #learning #funfacts #landsurveying #boundary

  • A land surveyor is a professional who measures and maps land. They help determine the exact boundaries of a piece of land, which is vital for building houses, roads, bridges, or settling property disputes. Surveyors use tools like GPS, drones, and special measuring equipment to determine the precise location, shape, and size of the land. Land surveyors, who are essential in every aspect of construction and land-related fields, face a significant challenge. The number of licensed professionals is steadily declining due to retirements, and there's an urgent need for new licensed professionals in the field. This shortage could have a significant impact on industries like construction, real estate, and urban planning, which rely on accurate land measurements. With Get Kids into Survey, we are creating educational resources that can help spread awareness about this unique profession and what it has to offer younger audiences who might not have even heard of it before. We are helping lead the way in spreading awareness and combating the challenge of getting more kids into surveying! #getkidsintosurvey #gkiswest #landsurveyors #educational #resources
