Fueling pathbreaking social science research that delves deep to examine complex global issues / at Harvard since 1958
About us
The Weatherhead Center for International Affairs is the heart of social science research at Harvard University, dedicated to addressing pressing global challenges. As a research accelerator, we assemble a multigenerational and multidisciplinary group of scholars, students, and practitioners to bring their unique perspectives to a wide range of complex topics—including religious conflict, climate change, immigration, and populism. We share our insights via our publications Epicenter and Centerpiece, and at seminars, conferences, and lectureships. The Center also recognizes that rigorous analysis requires long-term investment and is committed to preparing students to become the next generation of scholars who will tackle critical, far-reaching issues impacting our world. More specifically, we fulfill our mission to fuel pathbreaking research in several ways: * We support programs and projects that provide a framework for collaboration on focused research projects * We sponsor conferences, workshops, and seminars where scholars exchange ideas and learn from each other * We host public lectureships and other events on vital issues facing the world today * We award competitive grants and fellowships to global scholars and practitioners * We offer research funding to Harvard faculty and students, including our successful Weatherhead Research Clusters—which represent core faculty interests and push the frontier of knowledge in their respective fields As a dynamic research institution, we foster deep-rooted research, a wide perspective, and long-range vision. Our ultimate goal is a world better understood. 10 yrs ago today, Nadia Murad was only 21 when ISIS launched their genocidal campaign against the Yazidis. As families begin to return after a decade of displacement, more work is needed to support the survivors. Listen to Murad's story to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eNxXgZKM

We know that social media can be used to spread hate speech and divisiveness, but can algorithms also be harnessed for social good? Melani Cammett discusses this concept and the pros and cons of humanity's algorithmic future at the Delphi Dialogues. Her talk can be found on the Day 2 video at 44 min. https://lnkd.in/d-rK56cy

I am happy (and still shell-shocked) to announce that I am a recipient of the Harvard Heroes 2024 award. It is a university-wide staff recognition award, which "celebrates the accomplishments of Harvard staff whose work supports the mission of Harvard at the highest levels of contribution, impact and excellence." As I am about to complete my two decades working at Harvard, and 22 years at Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University (including two years as a predoctoral and a postdoctoral fellow), I am grateful to my supervisor and friends for nominating me and writing on my behalf. University administration is difficult work, even (or I should say especially) at a place like Harvard. It involves exerting maximum effort everyday to align expanding academic mandates with available human and fiscal resources. Many thanks to the 2024 selection committee, who saw value in what I do everyday. https://lnkd.in/eERyeERS

The election in India is a watershed moment, says Gautam Nair in the Harvard Gazette. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was victorious, but his Bharatiya Janata Party failed to win an outright majority in parliament. https://lnkd.in/e6e6gn3V
