About us
WCBD originally signed onto the airwaves in 1954 as WUSN-TV in what was then a very remote portion of Mount Pleasant. In 1983 Media General purchased WCBD from the State Record Company. In the years that followed, WCBD moved from last place in the market, to a contender for first place. The station went from producing one hour of local news, to producing three and one half hours of news weekdays. WCBD became an NBC affiliate in 1996. WCBD celebrated its 60th Anniversary in 2014. WCBD's call letters stand for: C=Charleston, B=Berkeley, D=Dorchester for the three main counties it serves. The news operation uses the latest technology to gather information from throughout the Lowcountry and the region. The main studio is located in a totally digital facility with office, technical and studio space in Mount Pleasant (just at the foot of the Arthur T. Ravenel Jr. Bridge). In addition to our main facility, News 2 also operates a news bureau located in Columbia. Our main tower facility is located in Awendaw which services viewers in Berkeley, Charleston, Clarendon, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, and Williamsburg counties. News 2 is equipped with two microwave live trucks, a mobile satellite truck, several portable microwave live units, and a fleet of news vehicles. Our news department has access to over 50 remote cameras located throughout the Lowcountry via the SC Department of Transportation Traffic Cameras as well as our very own Sky View 2 (tower cam) overlooking the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and the Charleston Harbor.

Mount Pleasant, SC – WCBD News 2 will host an exclusive prime-time telecast of a debate between six candidates running for Mayor of the City of Charleston; incumbent John Tecklenburg and challengers William Cogswell, Mika Gadsden, Debra J. Gammons, Clay N. Middleton and Peter Shahid. The event is currently the only scheduled LIVE face-to-face meeting between the candidates. “YOUR LOCAL ELECTION HEADQUARTERS: City of Charleston Mayoral Debate” will take place on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at 8:00 p.m. EDT, at the WCBD/News 2 studio in Mount Pleasant, SC, and will be telecast to every home in Charleston market. In addition, the debate will be live-streamed on counton2.com followed by an online-only post-debate special. The debate, hosted by News 2 anchor Brendan Clark, will be moderated by News 2 anchors Carolyn Murray and Riley Benson, who will pose questions to the candidates focused on current issues impacting the city of Charleston. Riley Benson and Brendan Clark will then host the post-debate special, breaking down the candidates’ reactions. The election for the Office of Mayor for the City of Charleston is scheduled to take place on November 7th
