🎉 Welcome to the #WatershedBio engineering team, Nick Watts and Alex Bao! 🎉 Prior to joining us as a Senior Software Engineer, Nick worked in translational genomics and data science at the Broad Institute for over 6 years. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Computer Engineering from Clemson University. Our newest Software Engineer Alex recently received his Bachelor’s in Computer Science from Brown University, after which he held internships in biopharma, mathematical computing, and investment capital. 🔦 In rare but deadly cases of late stage cancer, the disease can spread to the meninges around the brain and spinal cord – a complication known as Leptomeningeal Disease (LMD). How does LMD develop, and how can we intervene to treat it? In this 2024 Cell paper, Dr. Hasan Alhaddad and colleagues at the Moffitt Cancer Center leveraged #spatialtranscriptomics analysis to uncover how melanoma cells proliferate into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and lead to LMD. By examining the spatial landscape of melanoma LMD, the authors found: • The meningeal stroma play a tumor-promoting role via upregulation of SERPINA3 signaling, and also promote resistance to MAPK inhibition therapy • Melanoma cells cannot survive in CSF without the meningeal stroma • Knocking down SERPINA3 re-sensitizes cancer cells to MAPK inhibition therapy Co-authors: Oscar Ospina, Ph.D., Mariam Khaled, Yuan Ren, Ethan Vallebuona, Mohammad Baraa Boozo, Peter A.
