To provide safe drinking water, utilities need accurate knowledge of how pathogens are removed by various treatment approaches. Project 5110 can help with that 🤓 ✏️ JUST PUBLISHED: https://waterrf.co/3WvTF32 ✏️ This project demonstrates the inadequacy of settled/clarified or filtered water turbidity and identifies design, operational, and/or monitoring strategies for ensuring that the minimum Cryptosporidium oocyst removal assumptions of various regulations are reliably and cost effectively achieved. 🧠 Learn More: https://waterrf.co/3WvTF32 🧠 Principal Investigators: Liza Ballantyne (Toronto Water); Monica Emelko, William (Bill) B Anderson (University of Waterloo); Norma Ruecker (City of Calgary) Project Team: Alireza Anvari (Toronto Water); Elyse Batista, Kalani De Silva (University of Waterloo) Research Partner: The City of Calgary Water Services Research Program Manager: Lyndsey Bloxom, The Water Research Foundation

🦠 In the age of COVID, this world is no stranger to epidemics and pandemics. Project 5029 will help prepare the wastewater industry for future outbreaks of highly infectious virus. 🦠 🧫 JUST PUBLISHED: https://waterrf.co/4d3sB0u 🧫 Specifically, the research team assessed the persistence and disinfection of highly pathogenic emerging viruses on the World Health Organization’s watch list: LASV and SARS-CoV-2, the latter being the causative agent of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to viral exposure and persistence work with LASV, this research effort also resulted in the development of a quantitative exposure model for worker safety and viral release that may be used by wastewater authorities in the event of a virus outbreak to respond in a timely manner to questions regarding worker and public safety. 👷♀️ 💧 Learn More: https://waterrf.co/4d3sB0u 💧 Principal Investigator: Kyle Bibby (University of Notre Dame) Project Team: Marlee Shaffer, Justin Greaves, Aaron Bivins, Olivia Ginn, Katherine Crank (University of Notre Dame); Robert Fischer, Vincent Munster (National Institutes of Health) Research Program Manager: Lola Olabode, The Water Research Foundation

I am excited to announce The Water Research Foundation (WRF) has officially kicked off Version 3 of their Residential End Uses of Water Study. This version will not only build off the previous studies but will also establish a baseline for multi-family use. I am excited to partner with the wonderful people at Flume Water on this project, as well as over 50 North American utilities. Follow the WRF project page to keep up to date with the project’s progress. Their project information summary will be available by the end of July! #water #research #waterefficiency #demandmanagenent
I'm pleased to announce that Flume Water has been awarded the Residential End Uses of Water, V3 research study from the The Water Research Foundation (WRF). I am honored to be the Principal Investigator for this study and to have the opportunity to work with the outstanding research team which includes: Sarah Musiker, Joe Fazio, James Fazio, Grant Bernosky, Max Behrens, Anil Bamezai, Katie Frick, Christian Johansen, and Ralph Kaiser. Our WRF Research Manager is Sydney Samples. I was the co-principal investigator and lead author of the first two WRF Residential End Use studies published in 1999 and 2016. It is amazing to be able to continue working with high-resolution end use data through four decades of research. This 3rd edition will include an analysis of single-family and multi-family water use for the first time. The research will take 18 months and I expect the final report will be released in 2026. Did you know that in the last five ish years, WRF has had about 30 -35 reuse projects with funding from many including California State Water Resources Control Board, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and many, many water utilities? The research has covered a range of reuse topics. Want to learn more? Then please check out my 2-page article in the CA-NV AWWA Source Magazine, called “WRF’s Reuse Portfolio: Partnerships in Research”, bit.ly/3S2wmuN and our WRF Reuse Topic Overview, bit.ly/4cAaYVY. The CA-NV AWWA article touches on 7 research projects related to potable reuse: Pathogen Monitoring in Untreated Wastewater (DPR-2/4989), Tools to Evaluate Quantitative Microbial Risk and Plant Performance/Reliability (DPR-1/4951) (both led by Brian Pecson, Trussell Technologies), Evaluation of CEC Removal by Ozone/BAF Treatment in Potable Reuse Applications (4832) (led by Keel Robinson, Trussell Technologies), Assessing Water Quality Monitoring Needs, Tools, Gaps, and Opportunities for Potable Water Reuse (5079) (led by William Becker, University of Colorado & Hazen and Sawyer), Potable Reuse Demonstration Design & Communications Toolbox (4979) (led by Eric Eckl, Words that Work), Advancing Safety and Reliability to Protect Public Health: Identifying Quantitative Reductions of Viral Pathogens and Surrogates for Water Reuse Applications (5126) (led by Charles Gerba, University of Arizona) and Unlocking the Nationwide Potential of Water Reuse (5197), (with researchers from University of Colorado, Southern Nevada Water Authority, Colorado School of Mines, University of Washington, the WateReuse Association, and many water utilities).
