Lack of financing at the local and household levels is a significant barrier to equitable access to safe #water and #sanitation. WaterEquity addresses this gap by providing debt capital to financial institutions in emerging markets, enabling them to expand their #water and #sanitation lending. These institutions then on-lend to local #enterprises or expand their water and sanitation #microloan portfolios. The story of Suleiman Juma, a retired #Kenyan entrepreneur who founded Kumon Fresh Aqua Limited to provide affordable, #safewater to his community, exemplifies how affordable #financingsolutions can enhance #wateraccess and bolster local #economies. “More than 80% of the women borrowers live on less than $6 a day and many of them live on less than $24 a day. If we can get people living in poverty to meet us more than halfway by using these loans to fund their own solutions, we’ve got to be able to figure out ways to bring the capital to them from the top down.” - Gary White, Co-founder, Water.org WaterEquity. At the Impact Europe summit, speakers emphasized the importance of pressuring corporations to invest in #socialimpact, identifying clear theories of change, and addressing #gender bias. The gathering highlighted the need for continuous adaptation and accountability in #impactinvesting. https://lnkd.in/eCcAk2Eb #water #sanitation #invest #impinv

The 2024 Sustainable Development Report (hashtag #SDR2024) by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network has highlighted critical gaps in progress towards achieving the #SDGs. Globally, only 16% of the #SDG targets are on track to be achieved by 2030. The report states that two-fifths of the world already face high #water stress, and this will worsen with #climatechange, widening gaps in climate mitigation, biodiversity, and water quality. At WaterEquity, we are dedicated to addressing these challenges head-on. We believe that creating robust financial systems that tap into capital markets could be essential to scaling these efforts and potentially making a significant impact on #waterquality and #climateresilience.
