About us
Water-related risks to global security are linked to conflict, instability, migration, water and food insecurity, and waterborne illness, affecting the lives of billions of people around the world. Data is fundamental to understanding how water shortages translate into social consequences, where water-related risks are highest, what drives these risks, and what solutions exist. The Water, Peace, and Security (WPS) Partnership was founded in 2018 to pioneer the development of innovative tools that identify and address water-related security risks. WPS’ Global Early Warning Tool employs machine learning to forecast conflict over the next 12 months in Africa, the Middle East, and South and Southeast Asia. Through cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, human responses modeling, and remote sensing, the Global Early Warning Tool raises awareness of the risks of water-related security threats. WPS is working on regular updates to the platform to improve its model and extend its geographic coverage. National governments, actors from the global defense, development, diplomacy, and disaster relief sectors, and other stakeholders can use the tool to identify conflict hotspots before violence erupts, begin to understand the local context, and prioritize opportunities for water interventions. Based on this information, evidence-based actions can be taken to mitigate human security risks, which WPS facilitates through capacity development and dialogue support.

From June 25-27 in Hawassa, #Ethiopia, Water, Peace & Security hosted discussions on conflict sensitivity and fair #watermanagement, presenting preliminary findings on reservoir operation optimisation. Participants included the Ministry of Water's technical team, Gibe III hydropower operators, and scholars from wolaita sodo university, Arba Minch University, and Jimma University. Their expertise contributed significantly to enhancing the models and fostering meaningful dialogue on sustainable water management practices in the basin. Globally, around 4 billion people — 50% of the world’s population — are exposed to extremely high #WaterStress at least one month a year. By 2050, that number could be closer to 60%💧📈 💭What’s causing global water stress? Across the world, demand for water is exceeding what’s available. Globally, demand has more than doubled since 1960. Increased water demand is often the result of growing populations and industries like: 🚿 Irrigated agriculture 🐮Livestock 🔋Energy production 🏭Manufacturing 👉Meanwhile, lack of investment in water infrastructure, unsustainable water use policies or increased variability due to climate change can all affect the available water supply. 👉Water stress, the ratio of water demand to renewable supply, measures the competition over local water resources. The smaller the gap between supply and demand, the more vulnerable a place is to water shortages. A country facing “extreme water stress” means it is using at least 80% of its available supply, “high water stress” means it is withdrawing 40% of its supply. This week at #EnPax, WPS partners discussed how water is a good entry point for peacebuilding. They offered several examples from our work. For example, in Mali, the community, champions, and the media truly feel they own the WPS work, which allows for an integrated approach in reducing water-related conflicts in the Inner Niger Delta. In Kenya, well-informed, strategic, and intentional multi-stakeholder dialogues have been key drivers in resolving water-related conflicts in Turkana County. This week, members of the Water, Peace & Security (WPS) Partnership are active in various sessions of #EnPax's 3rd International Conference on Environmental Peacebuilding!💧🌍🕊️ WPS partners and other delegates traveled from across the world to The Hague to discuss issues such as harnessing water as a tool for peace and the power of data, for instance through the use of the WPS Global Early Warning tool, illustrated by case studies from Mali, Kenya, and Iraq. The WPS Global #EarlyWarning Tool predicts water-induced conflict up to 12 months in advance. Though trainings and dialogue, WPS raises awareness about the mutual benefits of cooperation when water is scarce. WPS analyses of the root causes of water-related conflicts, leading to strategies to address these causes. For example, in Iraq, WPS programmes have resulted in the adoption of conflict-sensitivity in #IntegratedWaterResourceManagement policies. And in Kenya and Ethiopia, cross-border cooperation has arisen thanks to agreements between stakeholders on both sides of the border. By understanding and addressing the drivers of climate-related conflict, we can turn cycles of violence into cycles of cooperation for peace. #WaterforPeace #WaterSecurity #WaterPeaceSecurity Svenja Wolter International Alert Audrey Legat Deltares Ibrahima Sadio Fofana Wetlands International Liz Saccoccia World Resources Institute WRI Water IHE Delft Institute for Water Education PAX for peace KNMI - Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) HCSS - The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre Mercy Corps Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken Jacob Waslander

Join Water, Peace & Security's session on 'Water as a Tool for Peace' at #EnPAx this Thursday!💧🌍 How are #water and conflict related? And how can water actually be a tool for #peacebuilding? Rolien Sasse will advocate for the breaking down of silos to achieve impact, and share examples of the work of PAX for peace. Ibrahima Sadio Fofana and Paul Ekwar will share lessons-learned of the WPS work in #Mali and #Kenya. Subsequently there will be an interactive discussion with Emanuele Fantini, Jacob Waslander, and Ibrahima Poudiougou, PhD, and plenty of room for questions from the audience. Hope to see you Thursday in The Hague! Spotlight on Asia: The Water, Peace, and Security Partnership tracks and regularly flags areas experiencing water- and climate-related insecurity. Our latest quarterly update highlights the deadly high temperatures across Asia throughout April and May, which affected millions of people. In China, heavy rains in mid-April caused massive flooding in Guangdong Province. Meanwhile, in Vietnam, drought and high temperatures impact coffee harvests and contribute to massive fish deaths.
