As a member of the REAL-Water consortium Water Mission's team in Uganda supported the REAL-Water team in researching the viability of the WQAF in Uganda. This included scoping systems, assessing eligibility and exploring potential collaboration with regional laboratories. Read the blog post below find out more about this #waterquality research project. #safewater
🇺🇬 How Do We Enhance Water Safety in Uganda? Progress: The #AssuranceFund’s successful implementation in Ghana prompted the #REALWater team to extend research assessments of its viability to Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. The challenge: Finding qualified labs for water testing in rural areas. Ideally, labs should be within a 2-hour drive to ensure same-day sample delivery. However, in Eastern Uganda, the closest options are either the National lab in Kampala (6-7 hours away) or government labs in Mbale (still 5-6 hours). These long distances make testing costly and could compromise water sample quality. The solution: The REAL-Water team partnered with the National Water and Sewerage Corporation, Uganda’s urban water utility, and visited the proposed project area to understand better what would be required to offer testing from a nearby lab. Adele and her son, Tyson, had their lives turned upside down when Hurricane Beryl ripped through their home. As she cares for herself and her one-year-old son, access to safe water is a critical first step to rebuilding after the storm. 90% of the roofs on Union Island were torn off, including Adele's. In a place where rainwater collection is the primary source of water, this is devastating. Adele estimates that their tank has approximately a month's supply of water remaining for her and Tyson. "We don't have long with this water, so I hope we get some kind of help with the water soon." To learn more or support our response, please visit https://lnkd.in/ei9xghsF
