OpenAI has finalized a $6.6 billion funding round from investors who valued the company at $157 billion — the latest in a series of dramatic and sometimes polarizing moves for the ChatGPT maker.

Corporate assistants have long been the keepers of company gossip and secrets. Now artificial intelligence is taking over some of their tasks, but it doesn’t share their sense of discretion. Workplace AI tools can do tasks by themselves. Getting them to stop is the problem.

Alertness can set in quickly, if not thoroughly, with the effort of standing up and moving to the bedroom, and as the mind engages. Reclaiming sleepiness, on the other hand, may require a good 10 to 20 minutes, the typical sleep latency — the time it takes us to fall asleep — under supportive conditions such as darkness and calm. This temporal asymmetry between alertness and sleepiness is typically reversed during the night because of sleep inertia — the grogginess, brain fog and pull toward sleep that help us return to sleep after a trip to the bathroom or that make it vexingly hard to wake up in the morning.

Van Ha carried an envelope filled with $12,000 in cash everywhere she went, planning to eventually give it to her three children. She felt safer keeping the large sum with her rather than putting it anywhere else, said her nephew, Truong Huynh. Store manager Dan Desfosses offered to look at surveillance footage to see if he could pinpoint when and where the envelope escaped her bag. He checked, but no luck. Just as they were getting into the car to head home empty-handed, Desfosses ran outside with good news: A customer had just brought the envelope to the service desk. Every dollar was still there.

On Tuesday, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) faced off in a vice-presidential debate for what could be the last time that Americans hear from either presidential ticket on the debate stage before Election Day. The stakes were high for a vice-presidential debate, so The Washington Post once again asked uncommitted, swing-state voters in real time about their reactions to Tuesday’s debate. They thought Vance performed better, regardless of how they plan to vote in November.
Who won the VP debate? Voters weigh in on how Vance and Walz performed.

“The best job market of many people’s lifetime is over. Going forward, workers and job seekers will have less bargaining power in most industries, and this will affect their pay and perks,” Heather Long writes in Opinions. Five-day mandates run the risk of backfiring, because star workers will be given an excuse to look for new jobs. https://wapo.st/4dtjSUU

Yet in an all-hands meeting Thursday, company executives sought to calm staff worried by the surprise resignation of chief technology officer Mira Murati and departure of two other top leaders — the latest in a string of senior exits.
