WCSS funds programs and/or proposed models that will provide direct services to children, families, child care facilities, or community organizations in alignment with evidence-based implementation, WCSS strategic priorities, and established community needs. About us
Wake County Smart Start is a nonprofit organization that prepares children for success in school and in life. We serve children ages 0-5 and prepare them for kindergarten and life ahead. Founded 1996, Wake County Smart Start improves the quality, accessibility and affordability of child care and family services. We are a private-public partnership that builds bridges between nonprofits, private child care centers and public institutions. We are administer the public NC Pre-K and ThreeSchool programs. We work closely with private child care centers to increase the quality of early childhood education and to place children in free programs. We fund programs across Wake County that provide much-needed services to children and families including parenting support, mental health services, early literacy and other community-centered programs. We believe that: * Learning begins at birth; * All children deserve the best opportunities to grow * Families and communities play a critical role in children's learning; and * Collaboration is essential to accomplish our vision. *Poverty is not destiny - if we invest in children and families, they will thrive.

Wake County Smart Start is excited to announce the expansion of our Wake ThreeSchool program this year from 100 to 200 income-eligible three-year-olds! Yesterday, WCSS and Wake County Government hosted a news conference Wanda’s Little Hands, a new ThreeSchool site provider, to celebrate the growth of the program. Thank you to the County Commissioners in attendance including Chair Shinica Thomas, Matt Calabria, Cheryl Stallings, Don Mial and the entire Board for your enduring support of early education in Wake County. Wake County Smart Start had the honor of hosting Congresswoman Deborah Ross at Kiddie Academy of Brier Creek for additional funding for affordable child care. Kiddie Academy of Brier Creek is one of more than 4,000 facilities in North Carolina that will soon lose access to federal funding from the American Rescue Plan. The funding is set to expire at the end of September, threatening to jeopardize access to childcare for over 155,000 children in North Carolina. A special thank you to Rep. Ross and to our parent speakers, the Paynes who shared their personal experiences as parents of young children.
